Martin Murray
I'm removing the steering box on my 57 TR3 and having trouble removing the fulcrum pin from the centre steering rod to get it out of the car to repair it. I don't want to damage it as its ridiculously expensive to buy? Can anyone suggest a good way to get the pin out please ?
Lebro
.The pin stays on the centre rod, you need to lift the steering arm off the pin. A normal ball joint taper splitter should do it. Bob Edited September 29, 2023 by Lebro
Martin Murray
Thanks Bob, I've tried a taper splitter, but it keeps slipping off ? I will concentrate on removing the control arm and not take the pin out from the top ! I've soaked it in penetrating fluid and will try to lever it off or find a better splitter tool ? Martin. Lebro
Hammer the wedge part of the tool as far into the gap as you can, before tightening the bolt, & perhaps use a G clamp or similar to hold it there. It's a good idea not to fully remove the nut on the pin end, but leave it flush with the end of the thread. Bob Good luck !
BlueTR3A-5EKT
I have the small screw type separator for the job you are doing. First image DO NOT USE A PICKLE FORK TYPE! Second image it will shock load the drop arm lever and probably chip the steering box worm
james christie
I always found the second item a bit brutal, particularly when you have used the first. Nice name here in France ‘Fourche à cornichons’ = ‘gherkin fork’ james
Martin Murray
Thanks for the tips guys! The manual says use a suitable lever, but the arm is very tight against the centre rod ? I like the look of the small screw type separator.

The one I have I had to reduce the length of the screw to get it in place.
Martin Murray
Problem solved by wedging a very small l plain screwdriver in then squeezing in a larger one on the other side through the expanded gap and it popped off ! Thanks for responding with all your tips guys ! Martin (York UK)
