I understand it's something to do with holding the column in the event of accident even though I can't imagine how. It's only fitted on later cars I'm told. Mine's an 81. Jerry's photo shows the screw positions (thanks Jerry) The screws tap into the underside of the instrument cluster. I didn't know that. That might help make the dash more rigid and quieter.
