Jim F
Hi, I'm looking for advice. I have a TR5 with a cracked block that can't be repaired. And my question is - what engine block serial numbers I can use as a replacement in my PI TR5? My old block serial number is CP2919-HE? Thanks for the help. tr6driver
Hello. On the Swedish Thiumph site there is a guy who are selling a unused engine block. TR5/TR6 factory new engine block. not used. in Stockholm. SEK: 2500:- (about 200 pounds) Lars Fors. E-mail: lgf@chello.se Oystein
Jim F
Oystein, thanks for the suggestion. Challenge is I live on the west coast of the USA so shipping costs would be, I suspect, staggering. So, if I can get some guidance on block compatibility I can maybe find the right block over here. Andy Moltu
You can use the early TR6 blocks - essentially the same as your TR5 block. The later 6's had grooves machines around the cylinders which might confuse a future rebuild (uses a different head gasket with a thicker ring around the bore to fill the ring. The saloon blocks again could be used but I guess they are pretty rare in the USA.
Bald Rick
Hi Jim There is some information about the interchangeability of Triumph 6 cyl. blocks on the net. There are small differences between the early and late blocks but I think (and you will need to check this) that they can be interchanged with care. As Andy has said there are recessed and non recessed top blocks, but I think some 2 litre blocks are also interchangeable, certainly the bore (74.7mm) is the same. This would bring in GT6 blocks which may be suitable. Certainly, this website: http://www.vtr.org/maintain/engine-mods-TR6.shtml suggests that the early ones are interchaneable with TR5/250 and early TR6. It might be worth looking at the possibility. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum also, saloon specialists like Chris Witor in the UK might also be able to give some guidance. Good luck Tony
Jim F
Tony, thanks for the guidance. Sounds like I have plenty of options to work with - as long as I'm careful. Jim
Eyetee
There was an advert placed in my Fathers Daimlar club magazine for an engineering firm stating that they can fix all blocks cracked chiped etc or £250 cash, worth a little further investigation, shall retrieve advert and company name
Eyetee
Advert was in "The Automobile" September 06 Baker Technilock ltd www.cast-iron-repair.com "And you can benefit from our services across the World including Europe, the USA and Canada"
Andy Moltu
I doubt it would be economical to metal stitch a TR block given that there are still both new & second hand blocks available.
cliffpeters
Jim, I have an engine from a '68 TR250 that's been sitting in my friend's garage in Michigan for about 15 years. When I lived in Michigan back in the early 80s, I bought a basket-case 250 but didn't have the skills to save it due to the bad shape the body and chassis frame were in. The 250 engine would be the carbureted version of the TR5 engine, but I think the block is the same, and I think the serial numbers would be from the right age bracket (I think but am not sure that the US-destined engines had a different prefix, however). I live in England now and I'm sure my friend would like to clear his garage of that motor for a reasonable price. Only challenge is getting it to you. Let me know if this is of interest. I live in England these days and have a 6. Cliff
Jim F
Cliff, thanks for the suggestion. Any idea what condition the block might be in? Was the motor completely dismantled? If the block's servicable shipping would be the challenge... Jim
cliffpeters
Jim, The engine is still an intact, complete engine. It's been sitting more than 15 years. Don't really know what condition it's in on the inside. Cliff Cliff, thanks for the suggestion. Any idea what condition the block might be in? Was the motor completely dismantled? If the block's servicable shipping would be the challenge... Jim
