ChrysW
I am a member of the register and would appreciate some assistance please. I have a 1972 TR6 Pi which has fitted a Magna Spark ignition unit which I think has failed as I am only getting three volts at the spark plug. The coil is working properly. I have looked on the internet for suppliers of the Magna Spark unit and have only found Tex Accessories but they are not responding to me. Can anyone suggest where I could source a replacement unit please?
RobH
Welcome to the forum Chrys (is that the name?) Yes there don't seem to be many other UK sources but the VW crowd appear to use it though I doubt theirs fits a TR: https://www.aircooledhut.co.uk/online-store/search%3Fkeyword%3Dmagnaspark. How are you measuring 3volts at the spark plug? You really can't measure voltage there without some very special equipment - certainly not with a normal multi-meter. In fact you would probably kill any meter you tried to do that with if the HT side was working. Also how did you test the coil ? Is this their 'dry' coil or the normal TR can type? If you are looking for a replacement, an alternative more widely available is the 123 electronic distributor, used by a number of people on here. Steves_TR6
I have the 123tune+ On my car and like it i used to have a lumenition unit in the car which was reliable too ( and is in a box somewhere in the garage !) as Rob says 3v at the plugs isnt realistic, how are you measuring that? steve
ChrysW
Hi Guys Thank you. I had an auto electrician test it. I really didn't want to change the set up but from your replies it seems that may be the only solution.
John L
If you still have the original distributor 22D6 I have had one of these fitted for nearly 10 years now and no problems, hope thats not a bad omen. Cheap enough to keep a spare if anything does go wrong. https://simonbbc.com/Powerspark-Electronic-Ignition-Kit-for-Lucas-22D6--25D6-Distributor-K1--R4 You will need silicone plug leads with the above, not copper wire ones. Most others will tell you to get the Distributor, rebuilt with points by Distributor Doctor, http://www.distributordoctor.com/ John Edited March 2, 2021 by John L
