adriantr4
Hi May I beg a rather ignorant question - I presume that to replace an axle oil seal (ie: the one at brake drum end) a Hub Puller is required?? My '4 has been quietly leaking oil onto the nearside rear brakes during its 5+ year snooze, and before that I seem to recall. Assuming the answer is "yes, obviously", and presuming I can lay my hands on said puller, should I: (A) Do both sides (yes, obviously?) (B) Replace the wheen bearings (yes, obviously?) Thanks. BlueTR3A-5EKT
To replace the most common leaking oil seal you do not need to remove the hub from the shaft. The offending seal will most likely be the one in the axle tube (GHS185) The other issue may also be a groove worn in the axle shaft where the seal runs and is supposed to seal. To repair this you will need to fit a 'speedi-sleeve' to that area. (SKF 99131 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/99131-SKF-Speedi-Sleeve/222283374405?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649) Not difficult to do. The other very important issue is getting the cross the car axle total end float to be within makers specification. This is a bit fiddly but quite do-able with a dial indicator and a micrometer. CHECK - 0.004"-0.006" I think - CHECK. The other seal (GHS162) in the rear hub does need the hub to be removed to change it. valvebounce
I would recommend these seals from TR Enterprises. They actually seem to work. I’ve replaced two sets of the commonly sold modern seals recently, they don’t last long. http://www.triumphspecialtuning.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=47&product_id=164 Something like this for getting the seal out quickly is a bonus https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-O-Ring-Seal-Puller-Oil-Grease-Seal-Hook-Remover-Removal-Mechanic-Tool/313111881980?epid=2296920176&hash=item48e6ec28fc:g:vMsAAOSw2TJe-YCq
adriantr4
Many thanks for the advice. I'm afraid my Upgrade To Fibre Broadband resulted in No Broadband for +2 weeks: You can imagine. So, my apologies. Your helpful replies are much appreciated. Same thing happened to me. I complained to Ofcom, but the regulator is in cahoots with the supplier - apparently this outage is acceptable. Just been down for a week after my line was disconnected when they put in a new line to a neighbour. Openreach must be one of the worst run businesses in the country, yet they have a monopoly. Jerry - still seething.
