hot-growler
Hello, I have a leaky oil seal where the drive shaft enters the diff on my 1500 spitfire. Has anyone had experience with this repair? Does the diff have to come out? Is there any particular way the shaft comes out of the diff? are there any special tools required? Any advice is gratefully recieved. Thanks, Steve. Nigel Triumph
Hi Steve, May not be the best part of the forum for this question but here goes anyway! The job will be much easier with the diff out of the car and on the bench, though not impossible in situ. Removing the diff shouldn't take much more than one hour, same to replace it. On the bench, lock the diff output shafts and undo the pinion nut. Use a 3 leg puller to remove the pinion flange. Hook out the old seal, press in the new one keeping it square then replace the flange and torque up the big pinion nut according to the workshop manual, with new split pin. Refit the diff and job done. Remember to drain before and refill with fresh oil after. Nigel
PandO
I think the previous answer referred to the wrong seal -i.e where the drive enters from the prop shaft. This is not too much of a problem to remove/replace. There are 2 drive shafts and I beieve these can be a pain to remove. Best done by a specialist with the correct equipment. jerrytr5
Whichever seal is leaking, you are probably best taking the diff out. Nigel's answer referred to the Propshaft or pinion, but you may be referring to the driveshafts which are known as output shafts. On a Spitfire the diff oil seals are relatively easy to replace. hot-growler
Thanks for that advice, was hoping that other 6 owners also had other triumphs like myself and this seems to be the only forum with such a wealth of knowledge and information to tap into. Always a great help, Steve.
