Bulatovic
Hi guys, a quick question - i should replace the valve guides for my TR4A, got a set of steel ones, but can't find the measurement for how much should they stick out from the top of the cylinder head? Anyone? Cheers Luka
TriumphV8
Do not know the TR4, TR6 is 19mm but you have to calculate with the cam anyway. If you have a sports cam you have to check. Add the valve and the spring cap and the little lockers and check for the full valve lift. The valve must be able to be opened the valve lift plus 3mm until the lockers hit the top of the valve guide. Often the guides must be shortened! From below view the exhaust guide must not look out of the casting. Its a nice idea to modify the guides to accept oil caps. Inlet will be happy to have just from beginning exhaust might be usefull after some wear..... Edited February 10, 2017 by TriumphV8
Fireman049
Hi Luka ~ Here's a little tip for fitting your new valve guides. Place the guides in a freezer for some time. This will cause the guides to shrink a little. Place the bare cylinder head in a hot oven for some time. This will allow the head to expand. Fitting the new guides will then be much easier. That's the way I've always done it. Tom.
Britishbest
Did exactly the same with fitting my ring gear to the flywheel, worked a treat.
