Hi all

I have a tr3a with non overdrive box

The input shaft protrudes past the main flange by about 3/4 inch

I also have a j type box with overdrive but the input shaft is more or less level with the main flange

Question is what do i have to do to fit the j type so that the input shaft sits in the flywheel spigot bearing?

The j type i think is saloon type, ive got a clutch plate with the correct amount of splines.

Any advice or experiances greatfully recieved!

Thanks

Tony

Most notable thing I recall is that the drive flange at the back of orig 2000 saloon will not fit your TR prop shaft. ....Oh and on the TR2 we fitted one to the exhaust was near and clout the overdrive and the solenoid was near to & clout the chassis. If you have the orig saloon top cover with the inhibitor sw on a plate behind the gear stick that will clout your tunnel so will need the switches moving to the top of the cover. Nice to have the reverse light switch though.

Download yourself a copy of the Moss TR5/6 catalogue and read Peter Cox's directions on how to fit a J type 'box from a non TR in a TR.

Pages 61/62/63 in the printed cat.

It gives dimensions for machining the rear drive flange plus other useful knowledge.

An unmodified saloon box will have a different input shaft, different output flange, different overdrive inhibit switches (3rd, & top only) a reversing light switch, the speedo drive will be at a different speed ( 2.5:1 for TR box, 3.5:1 for saloon), & if overdrive fitted the overdrive will not be as strong internally as TR, & will have the wrong rear casing to match your mountings.

Other than that they are exactly the same !!

Hi

Thanks for the replies

But the question is..is the input shaft long enough on the j type to reach the spigot bearing?

Or do i have to change it?

Thanks

Tony
