Efi on '71 TR6

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm considering fitting an Efi kit to my 6. I met a guy at a classic event who had done this, using a Vauxhall Senator fuel rail, mgf throttle body, 48mm?, edis-6 module, unknown coil pack, and other unknown components. Has anyone done a similar conversion, and can give guidance? Thanks.

Many, many people have. Search the forum (megasquirt would probably do) and you will get numerous threads to while away the small hours.

Your biggest question is whether to use a single throttle body or stick with multiple standard butterflies.

I converted my 5 in 2001, well worth it.

Many have done so because TR6 already provides all

the hardware of the PI models that can be used with

adding the EFI fuel management.

The ignition mostly is a nice add on with EFI but can be done later

not to add more work at one point than necessary.

The difficulty with that job is that several skills are required.

Its about combustion engine details, metal work and electrics

also plumbing and some software skills are required.

The good thing is that not too much of all that stuff is needed and the whole swap

is pretty cheap, very reliable and the output is very good if done correctly.

As posted above the first decision to be made is one or six throttle bodies

where one plate is okay for mild cams and six is good for all cams.

Its no disadvantage with the six but the requirement to sync them properly

so it was no question for me to take the original solution and refurbish properly.

I have also the single throttle solution at the Rover V8 in use and with the

cams around 280 degrees the engine suffers. Idle needs stabilisation and low

end is a bit rough, with the TR6 I would expect even more trouble with such a cam.

Many nonsense is reported about this swap, mostly from people who made the

wrong decisions and wanted to rectify later. With no doubt many systems can be used

they are more similar than the prices and their advertising show. Its a great help to

find a clubmate nearby to help with skill and adresses where the parts can be obtained.

This might give the most influence what system to choose.

I made several systems with MegaSquirt 1 and 2 and I am happy with them.

The fun starts just below 200 USD and a nice PI system from Ebay in the

range of 200 GBP. Fuel rail as the most difficult part from ROSS Racing,

injectors are OPEL Omega V6. TPS sensing is VW, fuel pressure regulation OPEL.

All is widely availiable and as all modern cars use similar systems most parts can be

interchanged.

So no more reasons to hesitate!
