Newbie: TR4 Won't Start

Recommended Posts

Newbie. Helping neighbor with 64, TR4. Will not start. No spark at any cylinder. Distributor rotates. Continuity on plug wires OK.

I am trying to get the specifications on the ignition coil - does anybody have ? We do not (yet) have a service manual.

I would like to test resistance on primary and secondary windings as a first step.

Also please interested in any other thoughts.

Thanks !

Remove the distributor cap, do you get a spark at the points when turning over?, is the brush in the centre of the cap ok? tried another rotor arm, these can short to earth through the plastic body.

Just measured resistances:

3.8 ohms across the two outside terminals (marked BATT and DIST).

9,900 ohms across the "center" plug and the BATT outside terminal

9,900 ohms across the "center" plug and the DIST outside terminal

Does this seem OK ?

I was expecting resistance across BATT and DIST to be a fraction of an ohm, like 0.75 ohms. But maybe that's not correct and 3.8 is comparable.

Thanks !!

+1 no spark no go

As an aside.... Your coil marked batt and dist means it wil be made for either pos earth or neg earth cars. You may find a mark on it identifying which car battery polarity it is designed to be used with, it is important or the coil overheats and gives a weak spark. Most modern mfct coils will be marked pos & neg on the LT connectors. Meaning no problems when fitting to either + or - earthed cars. You just have to connect correctly to suit your battery connections. TR 's swapped battery polarity at 4A to neg. or if an alternator has been fitted as a modern improvement.
