Hi

Have just got my newly restored  Four on the road and I had problems setting up the soleniod operating shaft as per the manuals alignment proceedure ie the two holes with a rod.

I sought advice from Dave of O/D Spares who told me to ingnore the manual and rotate the shaft lever until spring pressure was felt, then plus one or two mm more and tighten the solenoid clamp with the soleniod pulled up.

This worked great, both engaging and disengaging just like an automatic nine times out of ten, but on the tenth time it fails to disengage unless I pull the lever by hand :(

Is there any wisdom as to what's going wrong? Do I need to apply more setting pressure upon the operating rod spring?

Offer would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Phil

At the bottom of the solenoid plunger, there is usually a rubber boot to keep the dirt out.  This boot can cause friction and prevent the plunger from falling back down.  I have run mine for 15 years with this boot removed without any problems of dirt or hang-ups.  The plunger always drops with a crisp click.

It's possible that the lever is too close to the overdrive housing when the little bolt is tightened, wich can cause friction also.

Thanks Guys!

The operating arm did need some end float adjustment on both sides of the casing but the problem still persists occasionally. Is there any chance (given the o/d's age) some return spring is getting tired?
