Steves_TR6
Hi mechanics amongst us! I need to fit four 6.0 mm rivets, not on the tr but on Amita. Looking at my rivet gun it seems to only go up to 4.8 mm....... So does anyone know where I can buy a modestly priced 'jumbo' rivet gun, or lend me one in return for a beer! Need is quite urgent, job needs to be complete next week. Thanks in advance Steve
Guest
My google-fu sent me towards a 'Pull Link riveting tool' http://www.anzi-sinolink.com/products/riveting-hand-tools.html It looks as if 6mm is no problem. It's a Dutch based company. I can phone them for an dealer's address near you. Just let me know (PM) when I can help. Menno
Steves_TR6
Thanks Menno, their pl80r would do the job. I think I've also found something from silverline, widely available and cheap. Will try to buy the silverline tomorrow, if I can't find one I'll be in touch! Steve
RogerH
Hi Steve, I have a lazy tong riveter like the PL80. Don;t know if your 6mm rivet mandrel will fit though. What is the material of your rivet What is the diameter of the mandrel. I'll check the capacity of mine. If your rivets fit you would be welcome to borrow them. Steves_TR6
Thanks Roger. I don't have the mandrel, my riveter only goes up to 4.8 mm. Rivets are just aluminium std pop type rivets. A friend , motorbike group, thinks he has a suitable riveter so will try to get a hold of that. Rivets are in the post, and everything else is here awaiting completion, it's riveting stuff :-) Steve
RogerH
I will bring it down to Drive it Day (Hever castle) on Sunday. If you bring a rivet we will be able to see if it fits. Roger
Steves_TR6
Thanks Roger, my other hope hasn't worked out. Machine mart have a suitable riveter, but at £170 it's expensive for 4 rivets! If riveting won't work out maybe I could thread the aluminium and fit bolts instead? BlueTR3A-5EKT
I have a 4x air riveter if you are banging down solid rivets. Are the rivet holes blind? (you can not get to both sides of the rivet) in which case the solid rivets are out of the game. Is this thing critical? what about using cherrylock rivets for strength rather than Tucker 'pop' rivets. Here's rivetting reading http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10316&PID=1335869 Cheers Peter W
Steves_TR6
Cheers Peter, that's a riv... Interesting read! The vang lifts 230kg and the rivets are not normally under any load, transiently they hold the 230kg push of two gas struts. The rivets are blind 'pop' rivets, I measured the old ones at 6mm diameter, hence the thread! I'm increasingly thinking that tapping the alloy 'core' and using short bolts would be better than riveting. Will try to post photos tomorrow for anyone interested! Steves_TR6
Hi Guys Bought a tap and die set from machinemart, tapped the threads and the Boom Vang is all back together again ! Thanks for all the advice :-) Steve
BlueTR3A-5EKT
Good solution. Cheers Peter W
RogerH
I like Allen headed screws, I liike solid rivets. Pop rivets are for holding your jeans up. Roger

Great thing that all's well again. M.
