Road/Track tyres

Recommended Posts

I did a few jobs on my V8 competition car today and was feeling happy as it's now ready for a night road rally I'm doing the weekend after next.  Just popping back (1 1/2 miles) to the garage I keep her in and I ran over something on the road and trashed a tyre  :(

Not sure what to do now.  The tyres on the car are Yoko A509s (205/60/R13) but 509s are no longer available.  Can anyone recommend a suitable road/track tyre available in this size that won't break the bank??

Hi Malcolm

I checked mytyres co uk but the nearest stock size they have is 195 x 55 Dunlop SP sport 2000 - V rated @£56.40. You can ask them to check if they can get any 205 x 60 size tyres

blackcircles.com have a Falken ZE502 H rated 205 x 60 for £44.10 supply only

If you are on Yokos allround it might be best to bite the bullet and get 2 new to put on front or rear axle and keep the yoko as a spare - sooner or later you will have to replace them with something else

I also used to use the A509. when that became obsolete i tried the A510, but never really liked it. However the A539 is very similar to the old A509 & is very reasonably priced. There are stickier tyres & there are longer lasting tyres, but the A539 is a good compromise for the price.

Trouble is that A539s aren't available as 205/60/R13s.  To quote a Yokohama supplier 'Yoko now only supply motorsport tyres in that size'.  What size/profile do you have Andy?

Ho-hum.

Keep the suggestions coming and the Yokos will soon enough be gone.  Possibly not just yet though.  Just for a laugh I got Sue to take the tyre to ATS to see if they could repair it.  Not a chance, but they put me on to a tyre specialist who are confident they can.  So lets see.

When I told him the size/profile he said 'what on earth is that from?' though they seem confident this type of repair will hold on a track car.

I'm running 185/60-14 on the front & 195/60-14 on the back on 6" & 7" rims respectively. i am planning to change to 15" rims soon as i have found it hard to get V rated tyres in 14".

i will then use 195/50-15 & 205/50-15 i think.

cheers

Andy

p.s. re tyres, on the road I was running 205/60 13" Avons, but for events I was running Colways/Dunlop SP82/ etc, is mostly gravel tyres for strength.   Personally, Bridgestone RE720s are a good compromise, if you're willing to change the size of tyre you're running..Very thick sidewalls (strong) and good grip.  Probably not as good in the dry as Yoks, but better alrounders...

Thanks for the info Paul.  The event runs under MSA rules but it isn't really a 'road rally', I'm doing the Club Triumph 20 county challenge.  Visit 20 counties in 12 hours and at night!  You don't get the list of counties until shortly before the start.  Should be fun
