Which way up should a head gasket be fitted....bead up or down.....just had mine fail at the back of number 4 cylinder it was fitted bead up. I have a Stanpart gasket but it has no 'top' embosed on it.

Thx for the quick reply...I would have thought bead down..........it's has lasted 25 years bead up.... but was it fitted the right way round?...hoping for another 25years.

 

Liner heigths are ok and the stud holes are too......it has 88mm pistons so a bit less land for sealing.

Hi Dick,

 

Bead down has allways been stated as correct, is there any evidence of why the gasket failed ? You say the liner heights are ok, what are the heights measured with a depth micrometer at 4 positions around each liner along the block? (Only way to measure them).
