TR7 V8 Power Steering

Recommended Posts

Have a look at ebay No. 4522151053  Someone at last seems to be making a power steering rack for the TR7V8.

I have one of the original power steering units in my TR7V8 and in my opinion it transforms the car making it much lighter to drive with less turns from lock to lock. :D

Hi Robin.  Whilst I don't agree that PAS is necessary it is very interesting to find someone making the kit.  A couple of TR7 specialists have been promising to do this as original RHD PAS racks are now unobtainable.  Please, if anyone follows this up report back and let us know if it's any good!

Folks,

I think I can let this cat out of the bag - S&S have been working on an electric power assist system for some time now which can be easily added to any TR7. I saw it last year on a car and it looked a very neat solution. Give them a call 01706 874874 or visit their website as it is listed but doesn't give any further information yet.

Malcolm,

Whats neat about this conversion is that you don't need to change the rack or sub frame as it's all done in the cockpit! - Motor goes below the steering wheel and mounted just below the instruments so it's not visable at all. No one can tell power steering is fitted.

Carlos,

I spoke to S&S on more than one occasion last year about this system at that time it was still under test but they estimated the price to be between £600 to £800 plus they would prefer to fit it themselves.

Myself i have just bought the one of ebay complete sub frame and power rack £650.00 i will let everybody know how it is in about 3 weeks when i return from Vegas after making an honest women my better half.

Thanks Malcolm, i thought it was about time i did the deed even though she refuses to go in the Triumph she's not that bad, but she wasn't to pleased about spending £650.00 on a power steering rack one week before the wedding, but a man must get his prioritys right!!.

Strange woman, I can't imagine why!  You will have to do what I did with my wife and buy her a '7 of her own :D

An update on the new S&S electric PAS.  I spoke to Steve of S&S at Stoneleigh.  Their unit is NOT a Saxo one, but IS a self contained mechanism that fits neatly under the dash.  This means it will work for all TR7/8s regardless of engine/subframe fitted.

It won't be available for a couple of months as they are still working out the electrics, but Steve hopes a demo car with the new electric PAS will be at the TRR International in July.

Just got one question on this one. From what I remember, the original TR8 power rack was rumoured to cure the steering vibration common to many 7's (including mine). I'd guess that this was due to using different components or some isolation of the steering due to the power assist. Would an electric assist version like this do the same thing?

Hello folks,

I was actually bidding against that b****** Steve for that TR8 rack , just wish he'd gone on honeymoon sooner..  I left (what I thought was ) a suitable maximum and let the system bid for me,  never again.

Anyway I've heard several stories of people using a Triumph Stag power rack as an alternative to a pucka Tr8 type. Well, I've got one and can't see how the section that connects to the universals can posibly fit through the subframe. BTW Its not an S&S lowered one its a Rimmers standard TR8 type.

My cat told me I can cut the whole rack in half , insert it from either side of the car then superglue it back together, but I think he's pulling my leg.

I'm also having my doubts about the racks suitability due to the rather shorter length of the track rod arms as compared to the Tr7 rack (10 point turn anyone)

Does anyone have any more info or better still photos of a TR running one of these Stag racks.

I'd be most obliged.

Whatever, the car is up in the air so I guess I can always perform the roller bearing conversion trick on the struts if all else fails ;)

Heeley,

Sorry i didnt get married a week sooner so you could have got the frame and rack. If your intrested he is making more at £650.00. Also if its any comfort im haveing a nightmare fitting it as the new bottom half of the column you get with it now fouls the down pipes. I have heated and beat to death the pipe to make it fit but im not really happy, so im now bidding on some pop Brown manifolds which hug the block letting the shaft go the other side hopefully!!!, only £400.00 :( . Keep you all posted.

Steve.
