Murphy was right of course

Recommended Posts

Just finished lowering the 4A back on to the garage floor.

During the back to metal restoration project the front diff seal looked perfect, hadn't leaked on the 500K+ trip from Melbourne when I picked the car up, so 'if it aint broke don't fix it'.

This worked until the long post-refurbishment trip to the coast, about 200K each way. Then it decided to leak and give me grinding diff noises on the latter part of the trip.

Suspect was the original seal, and it had done its duty and quietly perished.

With this hindsight I will now exhort all restorers to replace it during the big overhaul.

I know I'm tempting fate, but I'm still running a water pump on my car that had an 'unknown history' during my 1989 rebuild...in this case the 'if it ain't broke' law has proven OK so far....
