Steering column lower bushing

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am new in the forum. Didn't find a specific place to present myself.

My name is Jose and I am in Spain. I have just bought a TR7 which has been standing for 8 years and there are some small issues to solve.

One of them is a terrible play in the steering column. There should be a bushing in bulkhead which is missing.

The part is available (see attached image) but I have no idea how to fit it.

Can someone show me how to fit this bushing, the washer and the spring washer?

Many thanks!

Jose,

I also live in Spain (Granada) i have aTR8.

I will also soon replace this bush.

From what i see the bush is inserted from the top side.

This will require the steering column to come up into the car through the bulk head.

If im wrong i hope others on here will correct me.

Please check your steering column universal joints for play as it will be easyier to replace these at the same time.

Regards

Stev

Hi Jose,

Welcome to the forum!

Steve is correct - you have to pull the collumn up into the car. The bush can be quite hard to fit at times - I have found it easier to warm the bush up in hot water or have seen them cut at 45 degrees so they can be made smaller.

the wavy washer and the flat washer are then fitted loose onto thge collumn when it is pushed through -

Hope this helps.

Regards

Ian

Thanks both for your replies!

Granada, lovely city. I'm in Madrid,

The column is already out of the car so this should make things easier.

I have not yet ordered the parts so I do not know how they look like. I'm still looking for other items that need replacing to order all together.

So the bushing is inserted from the inside of the car? The washers shall also remain inside the car? Maybe I am confused because the drawing seems to show the opposite and it does not make too much sense to me.

Hi Jose,

Sadly not quite correct - the two washers should be on the collumn on the engine side of the fire wall, just above the universal joint.

Cheers

Ian
