Guest Carlos The Jackal
Hello all, and a fine 2005 to you all! My renewal's about due on my DHC TR7 4.6V8, and my current insurer have sent me a bill for one (1) arm and one (1) leg. Bless them. To save me wasting my time ringing all the companies that only want to touch original classics, can anyone recommend a good insurance company for modified motors such as this? Any useful numbers hugely appreciated. Cheers!
malcolm
RH Specialist insurance. You need to have a normal day to day car (not insured by them though) and they will do all your classics. On a 5000 mile comprehensive policy I had my last TR7V8 DHC insured for just over £100 per annum. This included Uk and Europe breakdown and agreed value. You can also add more cars, including ones that are off the road, if you need to. At one point I had 2 V8s (on the road) and a 2L car (off the road) all for under £300 pa. Not bad at all I understand that Country Mutual (the club's insurance partner) can be competitive too, though not from personal experience. RH: 01277 206911 CM: 01789 204211 Malcolm. Cinnobar
I'll concur with Malc. 3.5 mildly tweaked on car valued at 12K for 3k miles a year is £ 150 with RH, CM wanted £ 250! Being oldgit helps I'm 47 and its second car. Jim
malcolm
The price difference (apart from Jim being an old git that is) will be down to my 3 cars having a TOTAL insurance value of under 12k! Malcolm.
Guest Kyle - Apex
live with it:P its £700 for me to insure my standard 7!
Guest Carlos The Jackal
Malcolm, Jim - prepare yourselves for a big kiss apiece. A thousand thanks for the tip. RH (bless them) saved me a stonking £250 off my renewal; technically "free money" which I can now gleefully "waste" on sweets, track days and sticky rubber instead of lining insurance companies' already bloated pockets. And Kyle - you must be about 19 to have such an expensive premium, in which case it is a fair cost to offset against you not making a groaning noise when getting in to or out of your TR's seat. ;-P Cheers guys! chris turner
Which insurance company are you with Kyle, £700 is very reasonable and my son Robert is 17 in 2 months and also has a TR7.
Guest Kyle - Apex
Good old footman james! I got quoted £4000 with a normal insurance company, for third party! rubbish! i think it comes out at like £719 or something?!
chris turner
Thanks Kyle.
gordon kerr
Dunno if this will be of any help to anyone, nor even if it applies generally but my daughter (20) has been driving as a named driver on my policy since she started driving. Recently she decided that she had to have a car of her own. Trying to get insurance (not on a classic I hasten to add) the best she could find was about £750. I suggested she should find out how much more the insurance would cost if she added either me or her mother to the insurance. The thinking was that if it did not add much to the cost it would add flexibility when, for example, the car had to go for servicing. She was a bit reluctant, to say the least, but under pressure tried for a quote with her and her mother. We were all astounded to see the quote, with the same company, reduce to £550 I don't understand it, I don't know what the logic is, and this IS insurance in my daughter's name with her mother as a named driver and not the other way round. If this is a general thing and also applies to classics it seems a good way to help a young driver reduce the costs of building up a no claim bonus
Guest Kyle - Apex
brilliant idea! my dad was talking about doing that the other day, i will have to look in to it when i get my next quote! but because im on classic insurance i dont build no claim bonus up anyway so i could do it as me being the named driver! CraigAddison
Had the same experience as Gordon with my wife's insurance a couple of years ago, having been involved in 4 accidents in 2 years insurers wern't too keen!! most quotes in the region of £1200 by adding me as a named driver the quotes came down to £800 ish. Don't understand the logic either, specially as she drove it 90% of the time. Craig.
Guest markh
I found CM very good !
malcolm
Lots of members have found them both helpful and competitive, which is why CM are the still club's insurance partner. I always try CM as I know they support the TRR. I suspect the only reason they haven't been comptitive for my own quotes is because of the nature of my cars (modified rather than original classic). Guest Kyle - Apex
CM wont insure me because im under 21 i wish over the past 10 years young drivers had behaved! there are some real bad drivers out there letting us young ones down!
Cinnobar
Heard a statistic the other week which is that in the 17-19 year old group 50% of them will have an accident claim in the first year! Came from someone in the insurance industry so should have a grain of truth. Jim
Guest Kyle - Apex
damn that 50% letting us down!
ngtf
My TR7 (2litre) was insured with CM until renewal time in August last, they wanted £180+ as a second car on 5000 miles. I am now with RH as their policy cost me an astounding £98.50 !! and that with unlimited mileage. Gary :blues:

chris turner
Kyle, I thought classic policies were only for over 25s who also have a normal car.
Guest Kyle - Apex
Most are but Footman James do it for 17 year olds! good old footman james!
Guest markh
CM were helpful, yes. however not only it there a min age also you have to have had a full licence for 2 years - so my other half who is 30 cant drive it yet. :-(
chris turner
Thanks Kyle, Robert has got his quote from Footman James, its very reasonable, trouble is they say he has to join the TSSC to qualify. Its a bit unusual especially as he is already a member of the TR Drivers club and the TR Register.
