Hi All,

I have never been very happy with the 5s petrol tank capacity,-it brims at around 40 litres,or 8 gallons in old money,

with 3 hungry webers to feed it doesnt give much more range than 200 miles.

Having completed a number of continental trips i have learnt to always carry a spare 5lts if things get a little

desperate,-and they hav,- on more than one occasion.

Tank capacity has loomed larger in my mind in recent weeks because i have had confirmation of my entry to

do the 10CR in September,- essentially completeing a round trip of Alpine Europe in 3 days with fellow

Triumph enthusiasts,- CT organise it and the mileage is likely to be in excess of 2000.

My question is :,are larger petrol tanks available and 2, what was the original capacity of a TR5 petrol tank?,

cheers,

Laurence

I think you can get slightly larger tanks, the 'alloy' ones from specialists seem to squeeze a bit more in. Dont have any links but they are readily found. Youve confused me as I was always under the impression (from various handbooks etc) that the TR5/6 tank held 55 litres....so your 40 throws me completley...lets see what others think.

Hi Laurence

From memory the original tank holds 11 gallons/51 litres, I have seen ali tanks that add an extra 6 litres or so to the capacity.

I guess that if you are brimming at 40 litres, the gauge isnt all that accurate, now theres a surprise.

Cheers Carl

I am now beginning to wonder what tank i actually have in the 5!.

It definately takes no more than 40 lts, which would seem to be 15lts

short of a standard 5s tank capacity.

Thankyou Stan for the link,

cheers,

Laurence

Something does not add up here?? I run webers as you know and I can get 275m + out of 1 tank but not on the track

Same here ( though I don't empty mine completely - that's what I'd get if I left 1/2 gal in ).

The TR250 factory owner's manual says 11-1/4 IMP Gal / 51 liters / 13.5 US gal.

Could there be some anti-slosh mod in yours which ate up capacity?

Laurence,

If, like my old tank from a TR6, you have baffles then you may be suffering from a blocked outlet from the anti-surge reservoir. Something I discovered when not being able to completely empty it through the outlet. And explained why for years I was puzzled that I was unable to fully re-fuel with the expected amount.

I am told the capacity of fuel tanks varied. Around 48 litres, 10.5 Imperial Gallons, is realistic.

Wrongly using 12 US Gallons (1.2 = 1 Imperial Gallon) for conversion will give a capacity of 55 litres.

Stan
