robgeev
My buddy and I this weekend added some octane boosting valve protector, the name of which escapes me-the stuff's in the boot, miles away. Anyway, correctly mixed with Optimax (shell) both mine and Carls cars flew!! It would seem this stuff boosts octane rating to similiar to that of 5 star, they went lovely, mine has lost a lot of its running on-need to retard the timing a touch more I think. Anyway, my point is that the adverts aren't necessarily a load of bollocks. Carl - if you read this and can remember the name of the additive-post it eh? Rob.
Guest andywduck
I am struggling with the timing on my car at the moment - i have 2 twin choke webers, and had them recently set up by a specialist, inc. timing, however afterwards found a lot of "popping" back through carbs at lower, steady revs. This was not straight after getting the car back, but a little while later. Tried changing ignition which helped a bit, then remembered the specialist had put more fuel in, inc lead additive, so i filled up with 98 ron petrol instead of 95 (more octane), and it helped a lot. Think i will try even more octane next, so would be interested to know what the additive you tried was! Andy

jean
There are not that many lead additives including octane boosters, and it's said that maximum boosting is around 2 grades. What I know is that last year some people used Miller VSP for their TR racers, don't know if it's still available. Jean
robgeev
This additive is manufactured by Castrol. Labeled as Lead replacement and octane booster, not sure where to buy it from though. Rob.
jonlar
Castrol make 2, Valvemaster for lead replacement (substitute - phosphorus based) and Valvemaster Plus which improves Octane as well, approx £5.95 and £9.95 respectively from Halfords. Has any one tried the Tetra product, this claims to be the only product which actually replaces with lead?
Tr4Tony
I use Millers VSP - as used by Steve Hall in ACE 222 B - my 4 goes like a rocket on it, particularly with Super Dooper Unleaded - not as quick as Steve's 220bhp (apparently!) Regards Tony
Guest andywduck
right! have found an old botle of castrol valvemaster plus in the garage that is used in my Vitesse, so will be dosing the '4 tomorrow! Andy
robgeev
Seriously, it makes a difference, also helping to reduce the bloody running on problem I seem incapable of erradicating. We are using this stuff in 3 4's, a 6 a Daimler and an E-type-good results throughout, 3 different drivers. Rob.
carld
The octane booster makes a hell of a difference, rob and i also fitted pacet fans and removed engine fan.The combination has made both of our cars much more free revving, and acceleration is very impressive for 40 year old cars. The cost is relatively low for the smile it puts on your face, give it a go you know you want to
Andrew Smith
Ok, read all this above; just been down and picked up some Valvemaster Plus from the local Halfords, couldn't see any Millers VSP though. Hopefully, it will cure my running-on, or at least reduce it, and improve performance, like it does for Rob; "bollocks" or not, we'll see. If doesn't work then someone owes me a pint. If it does, then I owe someone one at some time, but sadly not at Malvern as I'm on holiday - bad timing Bev !! Trouble is, I've just read that it is incompatible with catalytic converters - so I won't be able to fit one to my 3A now! Cheers Andrew
Andrew Smith
Yep, just got back from an afternoon blast; the 3A pulls really cleanly now and feels a bit quicker too and with less running-on. So, it's not "bollocks" after all, and I guess I owe someone a pint! Cheers Andrew
