If you read my earlier post you will remember my O/D was going in with a thud and a shudder when under load. Having stripped the O/D we found two brass thrust washers had completely been eaten,these were replaced and the rest was checked and thoroughly cleaned before reassembly. The gearbox although in good condition was also given a complete rebuild whilst the opportunity was there.  

Alas to my dismay after refitting the assembly and test driving the O/D still went in with a thud but was o.k when selected without any revs!! as before.the clutch linings looked o.k. so were not replaced. I now think I need a specialist so does any one have any recommendations. I am now P****d off so I am having to bite the bullet having already spent some £350 hard earned £££,s so I expect I will have to spend again unless some one knows a guarenteed solution. Barry - your description seems to point to the unidirectional clutch (sort of a roller bearing). The unidirectional clutch takes over the drive during the short moment when the overdrive comes in : without the unidirectional clutch, the engine revs up when the clutch (the clutch with the ferodo linings) moves from one position to the other

Yes! Phil and myself have discussed this point and regret not having replaced this item whilst unit was dismantled ,so it looks like its coming out again and the clutch will be replaced,

Barry,

You also need to check the clutch outer race very carefully (it’s pressed into the annulus) mine was actually cracked! Replace this also - if you can get hold of one! Availability may be better now but they were like hens teeth about 8 years ago when I rebuilt my unit. The only source I could find in the whole of the UK was a guy in Coventry (I think his name was Ernie Garbut), he had a few but wanted to keep these for his own recon units & initially would not sell to me but after continual pestering over a couple of months he eventually relented.

The most common thing that causes a clunk when you switch into overdrive is if you are letting up on the petrol pedal just as you switch.  If it doesn't happen in gear when you switch, it sound like this is the very simple solution.  Take it out for a drive and do the following very easy test and come back here with the results.

 

Drive up to whatever gear you have overdrive in and without letting up on the pedal, keep accelerating and switch into overdrive.  It should switch into overdrive without a clunk.  Try it again and again.  Same when downshifting keep you foot down on the pedal.  It should shift like an automatic.  

 

If you find it is slow to shift into overdrive when you do it the suggested way, then let up on the pedal for a tenth of a second after having switched into overdrive.  This will let it shift perfectly.

Hi Don, If I put the o/d in under any revs at all it rips the rev counter cable to shreds as it slips that badly and nearly takes the back end off the car, seriously!!.  Cheers anyway :(

I used them for my overdive, and a gearbox - I can only speak as I find - they were very,very good, very reasonable and have got some real expertise  - and an overdive pump pressure machine test machine.

Rang them today Bill, they seem very knowledgable and helpfull so I am taking the o/d unit down to them.

P.S. They suggest it could be lack of pressure from the pump which we never thought about so hopefully it will soon be back in the TR working perfectly.

:D Its fixed!!! OSR sorted out my o/d unit and what a brilliant job they made of it ,looks like brand new and works better than it ever did!. It was well and truly in need of some t.l.c. So if anyone has a problem with an overdrive dont waste time like I did trying to repair it just send it to the experts at ORS and get it sorted first time.
