ChrisGrainge
Hi all, Took the diff out yesterday - and the pinion bearing had gone... ah well I thought, these things happen - took the back off, just to have a look, and the oil had all gone (later found a crack in the back casing) and there were a couple of large bits of shrapnel floating around inside... crown, sun and planet wheels look OK, can't get a good look at pinion gear, but my guess is that's the one with teeth missing! My question is, who should I send it to to repair... there is a huge variation in price (nearly double from some suppliers), do you get what you pay for, or not? My opinion is that the best is always the least expensive in the long run, but is price a guide to quality... I know these questions come up all the time, and they aren't easy to answer, but any help would be gratefully received! Thanks Chris
Bald Rick
Hi Chris I took my TR6 diff to Hardy Engineering near Leatherhead. They are a gearbox and axle specialist. They have a fair bit of experience with competition cars (they race AH 3000s I seem to remember). They were not cheap but did an excellent job, including new crownwheel and pinion, all new bearings and oil seals. There was a reasonable guarantee as well. I chose them because they were fairly near, had a good rep and offered a guarantee. Cheers Tony
NickKerfoot
Hi Chris, I had Moss put a new 3.45 cw&p in my TR4 arfter the original 3.7 pinion disintergrated - as recommended by Mr Cox himself. He said he'd only ever had one failure post rebuild. Its been in there nearly 3 years / 12,000 miles with no problems. The higher ratio diff puts the road speed up by about 10% for a given engine speed. I am using a TR5 speedo to give a correct speed reading. Excellent for continental cruising! 88V8
TR Shop have recons about £550 with old cwp or about £650 with new cwp, those figures from memory. I have a TR6 3.45 diff which I recently removed to fit a 3.7. It's a recon, don't know where from, fitted by PO about 3,000 miles ago, and it's perfect, no backlash no leaks no noise. Just needs a back cover and your drive flange, as I robbed them to fit the (ex-saloon) 3.7 diff. Now probably I'll never use it again, on the other hand I might keep it as I know it's perfect, on the other hand I should sell it as I'll probably never use it, on the other hand... If I were to sell it, won't be cheap, but here it is, perhaps it's waiting just for you.... Ivor
Bald Rick
Ivor That seems very expensive, I paid about £500 for my rebuild. Tony
Alec Pringle
3.45 on a 4/4A is great for relaxed cruising, but you do lose out a bit when it comes to thrashing round the lanes . . . If the engine has been tweaked a bit then that's a different matter, it'll pull the 3.45 with no sweat ! If you do want to go that route Chris, I have a spare 3.45 crownwheel and pinion . . . new, unused modern gears, not original Stanpart. Cheers, Alec
ChrisGrainge
Wow - thanks all, didn't expect all that.... Hadn't considered changing the ratios really - the engine will be warmed up a bit, but no more than that... I'll have a think and get back to you all.. Thanks again Chris
