jstone
Have recently had the delight of disposing of £53 for a red certificate : ( As part of the MOT Failure I haev been told that I need to fit a new steering rack.........it could be worse................. I am thinking of buying a whole new unit and going for the quick rack with metal clamps. Any comments on this approach and anything I should be aware of / practical tips before I order a unit and go for it. As always the tapping into the wealth of knowledge out there is greatly appreciated. Cheers Jeremy
scotty
Whats the problem with the rack? Is it movement of the rack within the outer tube ? if so you can get new replacement bushes to fit in , takes about an hour or 2 , but costs less than a tenner.
Richard Crawley
Before you junk or do any work on the rack, you need to know why it failed, it could just be down to movement in the rubber mounting bushes; this is common as they are more often than not incorectly installed! If it's the rack itself, you could get a recon unit; I don't know how much they go for thwese days but if your used to working on such things, it's probably one of the easiest to recondition. You can adjust practicaly everything & the only thing that really wears is the nearside rack bush; on a RH drive car of course! Just noticed your ref to getting a quick rack; I would avoid it unless your going racing; as you know, the 6 doesn't have power steering & the standard rack can be heavy enough as it is! harrytr5
I fitted the quick rack three years ago and forgot about it till now on reading this thread.I have not regretted it and only fitted it because I wanted a brand new unit for my 'baby'. Costly, yes,but what my 'baby' wants she gets. Regards Harry TR5 Nutter.
