  1. Hi, have a  1964 TR4 with a  type gearbox and overdrive.

There appears to be 2 "senders" attached to the gearbox - top and side. I have tried to photo them as attached.

Can anyone tell me what their function is. your thoughts much appreciated.  Thx Rob

  2. Doing a respray on my TR4.

Dismantled screen frame and sprayed separately, now comes the time to refit screen with new rubbers etc.

Can't get anyone - not even national windscreens - to tackle the refit.

Does anyone have any ideas who may be able to refit the screen for me.

Or does anyone want to help me - with guidance from Youtube etc.

    I live in Aylesbury.

    Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Rob.

  3. Thanks for the comments on this.

I wanted to change purely for aesthetic reasons - yes I liked the TR4a front more.

But the gearbox issue seems to be a problem.

Is there a difference in the size/location of the gearbox/gearlever.

(this will probably expose my ignorance. But I would rather know.)

    Thanks.

    Rob.

  4. Want to replace the TR4 H support bracket with the TR4a H support bracket.

Does anyone have any experience swapping these over, and are there any problems I should be aware of. ie - do they fit and support in the same places.

    Thanks,

    Rob.

  5. Hi,

Trying to fit the j type gearbox conversion bracket to my TR4.

Impossible to fit the exhaust through the chassis crossmember - should the conversion bracket have spacers fitted to raise the plate and gearbox a little higher.

Would this throw out the alignment of the transmission, or is this fairly forgiving in that respect.

Spacers appear to be my only option unless I can be advised otherwise.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thx Rob.

  6. Hi Roger, new engine - 2 weeks old, new ally rad, new Clayton , new control valve.

Still bl**dy frozen driving to work these mornings.

Is this the price for driving in the winter in aTR4.

Mind you I have had this one for 15 yrs, but when expectations step up you would think the hype would be matched with performance.

    Or shall I shut up.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Rob.

  7. Sorry a it late into this topic.

Fitted a Clayton heater complete to my TR4, with an appropriate three speed switch, but have found virtually no improvement - still negligible blower. Has anyone had a different experience, or amI the only mug.

    Yours, severely depressed.

    Rob.

  8. Hi to all, and thank you for your comments on this.

I did go back and use some of the info you all offered, but the metallic noise does sound fatal.

I did mention about loosing oil from the rear seal, - now to an unacceptable and costly level.

So to sort that would mean an engine out scenario, so why not attend to the mechanical failure at that point.

That's where we are at the moment.

I have started another thread under the Technical section - Engine rebuild - new or DIY.

Again any comments would be appreciated and add a little comfort to a very miserable (for now anyway) member of the community.

I'm sure I'll have a smile on my TR before too long.

    Thanks again, Rob.

  9. Hi to all,

    Advice and direction required.

Looks like my TR4 needs an engine rebuild. What options are available and what pitfalls are lurking which ever way I go. Can anyone suggest the best route.

1 - buy a newly rebuilt engine - where can I get one from ??

Any suggestions of suppliers, and what would be the approx. price for a unit.

I am looking for a standard unit, or uprated (not for racing, but regular road use around London and counties.) which ever is most practicable and reliable.

2 - DIY rebuild - have reasonable aptitude after 20yrs fiddling with TR's.

But aware that specialist advice/intervention required at certain points - balancing, selection of parts combinations etc.

Are there any suggestions for parties who may specialise in the details of building a TR engine.

I know its brief and such a big project, but any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

My overriding intent is to obtain reliable, sturdy unit for my lovely TR4.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Rob.

  10. Hi, have a TR4 for many years(15) and been a good runner - 10k mls per year.

Turned it over Sunday and ran with a new metallic knock in the engine. Stopped and tried again - same.

Decided to adjust tappets - as not checked for ? 18mths. Tried to turn over - no firing.

Check spark all 4 cylinders -OK, petrol supply - OK, did compression test, 10, 9.5, 10, 2.0 bar for cylinders 1,2,3 & 4.

Spark plugs were in really poor condition - cyl 4 black, 3 crust build up around ceramics other 2 not so bad.

Where do I go from here.

Incidentally, have a really bad oil leak from rear seal and was going to get this shorted in near future.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thx.
