andrew jackson Posted January 12, 2018 Report Share Posted January 12, 2018 I have a TR3A with o/d gearbox that suffers from oil leaks from the gearbox (approx. 1/4 litre /1000 miles). I can live with this but ideally would like to stem this incontinence.. There was leakage from the g/box speedo take off and the seal has been replaced but I haven't recently checked to see how effective this was. There is still leakage occuring.and so had assumed that at some stage the g/box would have to come out and various g/box seals would need replacing. However, I recently read an article in Practical Classics in which one of their staffers with a TR6 had stemmed his g/box oil leaks by checking the breather on the gearbox and discovering the one on top of his o/d had been blanked off. On reinstating it the pressure in the /box was relieved and no oil was being forced though the various seals.- problem solved. Nowhere have I seen any TR manuals that makes any mention of a breather on the g/box.. Before taking the g/box tunnel off to check does anyone know where the breather is and, if missing, what part is needed? Thanks Andrew Quote Link to post Share on other sites
peejay4A Posted January 12, 2018 Report Share Posted January 12, 2018 The breather is on the A type overdrive, not the gearbox as such. J type overdrives dont have a breather so the gearbox top cover has a drilling to provide breathing. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
RogerH Posted January 12, 2018 Report Share Posted January 12, 2018 Hi Andrew, the leaking OD take off could also be coming from the three selector rods. These have an O ring that normally does a good job but when the fail the replacements appear not to work also. I have fitted 'Quad Seals' on mine as recommended by another poster on here. I got my seals from Mayday Seals in Gloucester Q112 or 4112 should give them enough info to work on. Also the rigging pin shaft can also leak quite nicely. Very do'able insitu but a bit fiddly.
