Do I need an overhaul of my Su

Recommended Posts

By the yearly inspection (MOT-like), my TR4A has to have a CO % lower than 4,5. During the test, the value varies from 3,5% over 4,5% to 5,5% and back again to 3,5% in 30 seconds. It means that the mixture in the carburetor goes from poor to rich and back to poor. The car is equipped with SU HS6 carburators.

I heard from soaking false air, but I do not know exactly how to detect it (spraying inflammable gas on the rods and listen if the engine react?). Anyhow, if I would find a leak, how do I repair it? Can the level in the float chambers have an impact? Is a overhaul after 130.000 miles advisable. Thanks for your inputs.

I should have thought 130,000 miles would make them well overdue for a rebuild.

Float level will have an impact, but your rapidly fluctuating CO levels is more likely due to an air leak, possible due to worn spindles.

Apart from Burlen services (link above) there is some useful information here (no personal connection or recommendation, but very informative):
