TR Action London Group report for issue 319

TR Action London Group report for issue 319

Well, we’re not quite sure what happened to our submission for TR Action 318 and we're not quite sure why this report didn't make TR Action 319, so here’s a slightly longer update than usual!

London Group remains as busy as ever with events & gatherings coming thick and fast. The first event since our leader’s last report was when a small but select group of 7 TRs from London Group visited one of south-west London’s best kept secrets on Sunday 22nd September – the Kempton Classic Car show at the Kempton Steam Museum. The weather didn’t look too promising, but the rain held off until midday, so we were all able to enjoy looking around some fascinating vehicles (including a Ferret armoured scout car and a beautifully restored 1937 Fordson fire engine). We also saw the world’s largest working triple-expansion steam pumping engine in action and enjoyed the magnificent Art Deco pump building - well worth a visit if you’re ever in the area. The event is an annual one, so keep your eye out for it next year.

Early in October we went to Crown Classics 30th anniversary gathering at their workshops in St.Margarets, Twickenham. 20 members duly arrived (many in their TRs) possibly due to the promise of free burgers & drinks where we all had a splendid evening chewing the fat, kicking a few tyres and nattering away till late - I think Jay & Tony thought we would never leave! But big thanks from all of us to them for extending such hospitality.

Shortly afterwards, our intrepid leader set off on the 10-Countries Club Triumph Run in his 4A which was going very smoothly until he lost his passport, entailing a 1,000 mile detour to Marseille on top of the 3000 mile journey! But he still arrived home smiling - but we pity his co-driver!

On the last Sunday of October, we gathered at the crack of dawn (thank goodness it was the day the clocks went back) to attend the last Brooklands Breakfast meeting of the year. Nine cars duly arrived to get an early start - the queues to get in have been so long this year - and it worked like clockwork as we got through the gates in no time, and were able to ‘baggie’ one of the best spots for a Triumph display. When a few more arrived, TR-Register Triumphs were comfortably the largest club showing at the event. The weather stayed good and a hearty breakfast was followed by a gentle wander before our leader flogged his car up the hillclimb to great applause!

Finally, two of our members represented the Triumph TR6 marque at the Regents Street Motor Show on 2nd November, so congratulations to Nick Loizou and Steve Bamforth . Three TR6s were given permission to be involved, and they garnered plenty of interest throughout a rainy day (well they did once the Rugby World Cup had finished - I think it was a bit lonely until then) looking marvellous outside the Cafe Royal. There was a very interesting collection of cars of all ages (there were several vintage cars which were going to do the London-Brighton Run the next day) right down Regents Street which obviously had been closed for the day, so another one for your diary next year.

Winter has now arrived (no snow yet though) and the first salt has been put on the roads, so the rest of November has been a quiet month for London Group, with just our usual Thursday evening gatherings.

By the time you read this it will be 2020 and we will have had our Christmas dinner on 14th December (more on that in next month’s edition), plus our regular outing to the Brooklands New Year’s Day gathering – usually a packed event!

Looking forward to 2020, you are always welcome to come and join us for a noggin and a natter over a beer, you are most welcome on the third Thursday of every month at the Star Inn, Malden Rushett or on the 1st Thursday of the month at different locations (more often than not the Rose of York in Richmond) - please keep an eye on your emails or on the website events page.
