Glavon Group at The Aircraft Disassembly Facility, Kemble. 6th July 2022

A fascinating tour of a facility where end of life aircraft are dismantled and useabled parts recovered. With the contraction in the airline industry caused by the pandemic, many planes have been taken out of service and brought to Kemble for storage, including a number of British Airways 747s. Some planes are dismantled, but as the industry recovers, others are recommissioned at the facility for further use. We were regaled with many facts and figures, but one of the most unexpeted was the fact that fixings used in aircraft worldwide are in imperial rather than metric sizes, including those used in Concorde. How did they ever get the French to agree to that! Our visit was followed by a very nice lunch at The Tavern in nearby Kemble village.
