Smeggie
Hi I have taken tuning the engine on my 1970 TR6 as far as I can. It still wont idle smoothly. I live in Aylesbury Bucks. Can any one recommend some one to set it up for me at the right price. Its all standard except for the unleaded head. Thanx Smeggie
Guest caine62
I've also been thinking about a tune-up. How much should one expect to pay for one?
BryanD
If its a standard Pi there isn't really that much 'tuning' to do. You can't adjust mixture, advance curve etc. Its probably better value to do it yourself. The main tips are to ensure that everything on the ignition side is in good nick. Replace anything that's at all suspect as its all fairly cheap. Assuming that you have a timing light, set the advance to about 10 deg. BTDC intiallly, then tweak it until it juuuust starts to pink under heavy load in top. On the fuel side all you can do is check for air leaks (especially around the throttle spindles) and ensure the butterflies are synchronised. You might also consider getting the injectors serviced and balanced - see separate threads on this. Finally, bear in mind that all the early Pi cars have a fairly rough idle, so don't expect to get it perfect. This is mainly because it has quite a sporty cam. Apparently, owner grumbles about this were one of the reasons why the later cars were de-tuned. Good luck

Red Arrow
Hi Smeggie I have an early TR6 CP series and could not get a reasonably even idle -- BryanDs comments perfectly true--they never idle smooth. "Part of the Character" Im told --I am not sure what you have done so far but I eventually got to the point where I invested in a set of injectors on exchange from Prestige Developments. I chose the word invested as it is not cheap to do them all but i must say the results are great both on improved idle and a very smooth on take up in any gear. The other thing to try on the injectors is to take them out whilst the engine is running ( on tick over) and check to see if they are all "spraying" petrol-- do this into a container of some sort--its not as dangerous as it sounds--you may find that say number 5 or number 2 are not spraying fuel. If its not --pinch the injector end and pull it forward a little to free it up. If this "sticking" continues from time to time they are best replaced Sorry--If you have already done this and im preaching to the converted. Good luck

If this "sticking" continues from time to time they are best replaced If the injector is blocked blow through it with an airline (or a cut down airbed adaptor on a footpump) - the pulling at the nipple may shift some debris but not all & a little bit of debris is an expensive reason to exchange an injector. kahunakahuna
I fully concur with Brian's comments all of which are within the means of a DIY mechanic! However there is one other check you should make which did make a difference to the (almost) smooth running of my 6 and that is checking and adjusting the valve rockers. I was at a loss trying to get her running smoothly at tickover and at full chatt, I'd replaced all the injectors, the timing was spot on but still the idle was very lumps and there was some hesitation through the rev range when booting her. One of the mechanics at work suggested that I check the clearances on the rockers which I did and although I didn't notice any real variances from the what was laid out in the workshop manual, however the car was transformed afterwards It took me 30mins following the W/S manual and now forms part of my monthly service. If you haven’t got the W/S manual let me know and I'll let you know the procedure Darren
Richard Crawley
Agree with all of what’s been said; the system is fairly straightforward for DIY but if you feel you’ve taken things as far as you can, my advice would be to use only one of the recognised specialists as ill informed twiddling by someone who doesn’t understand the system will only make things far worse. Prestige would be my first choice but any of the "better" TR suppliers should be able to sort it but it’s probably gonna cost you!
