Oil pump inner rotor cross drill and pin

Recommended Posts

Oil pump inner rotor cross drill and pin to its drive shaft to be sure it cannot spin and cause oil pressure loss.

This task is probably required if the inner rotor of the oil pump is attached by spline only to its drive shaft.
There had been a batch of oil pump rotors that had not been cross drilled and pinned but spline fitted only.   This salvage method is to ensure the inner rotor stays being driven by its attached drive shaft.

The cross drilling I have just done to the rotor of a pump that has done very few miles so is in very good order and therefore I considered was worth saving.    The machine shop cost of doing the modification is probably more than a replacement rotor set would be however.

The cross pinning was done using 4 mm diameter silver steel rod.  The rod was secured by interference fit and suitable Loctite adhesive.

Simple task.

Find centre of lobes.   Centre drill to start hole.   Through drill to undersize to accept 4 mm rod. (5/32”)   CHECK !

Check before proceeding on a bit of scrap and your chosen bit of silver steel rod.

Press fit pin with Loctite.  Ensure pin ends are below rotor face.
