SU HS6 conversion (TR4 vs TR6 carb?)

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

After having a lot of problems with the Strombergs, I found a pair of SU HS6 for my TR6.

After having a closer look, it seems it's this model for TR4: https://mossmotors.com/genuine-su-carburetor-set

While for the TR6 they propose this model: https://mossmotors.com/triumph-tr6-250/fuel-intake-emissions/hs6-su-carburetor-conversion-kits

The difference between both -at first sight- is the fact that the TR4 model doesn't have the breather pipe, like the TR6 model has.

Does anybody know if there are other differences? Or if the TR4 model would work on a TR6? (jets, needles,..)

The TR4 ones will work just fine as core units, you would need to change needles/Springs and possibly check the damper numbers though they will probably be OK.The extra breather pipes would mean either having to blank them or "T" the rocker cover vent into them. Looks as if you would also have to buy the cross rods with the 4 set though.

Thanks Stuart.

What are the cross rods you mention?

If you look at the picture of the TR6 carbs you will see they have the rods that connect the throttles and choke levers of the two carbs whereas as far as I can tell the TR4 ones dont come with them. You should be able to use some of what you have already with the Strombergs though.

I think I see what you mean. So far I was able to connect the throttle to the levers too. Only the choke cable is not yet fitting. The top is too wide to fit in the little hole that is foreseen on the SU’s. And only one cable is required instead of the 2 for the Strombergs.
So that’s something to fix.
Then the breather pipe from rocker goes straight to carbon cannister (<72). As the SU’s don’t have the breather holes.
And then some needles/springs as you mentioned.
Any idea which ones are the right one for the TR6?

This topic might help. https://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/69531-adjusting-su-hs6/

What kind of problems are you having with the ZS carbs ?

Hello poolboy. We are not able to tune it decently. The smell is insane. Idle going up and down. See my other  topics about these issues. We basically gave up. As there is no expert in the neighbourhood, this seemed the best option price/quality/time.
