You may recognise the title as a quote from Steve McQueen; he was no mug. 
I recently removed the damper links from my TR3 to replace them with spherical jointed links. 
I was interested to find that although the damper end pin had become loose in the rubber the rubber itself was in great condition so I opened up the other end to find that it was still like new inside after at least 35 years of use and abuse. 
I doubt that the new spherical joints will last as well.

The advantage with solid mounts is that it diffuses stress everywhere else so you can keep replacing other cracking components forever - and it gets funnier every time.
