I installed a Revington gas tank firewall in my TR4A!

Recommended Posts

Folks, I thought I’d put up some pictures of the installation of the gas tank firewall I got from Revington:

First, let me be VERY clear that I am by no stretch of the imagination, a sheet metal worker! In fact the only sheet metal tools I have, is a small ball peen hammer and a pair of tin snips.

The first thing I had to do was remove the rear trim board, the roll bar, and then carefully peel back the vinyl trim from the rear vertical edges (this install would be so much easier on a car that doesn’t have an interior yet).

The kit comes with three flat aluminum pieces: a large back plate, and two smaller “ears” for the corners. All three are close in size, but need to be curved and fitted. Like Project Binky, I used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to get the pieces close, then “massaged” them into place.

The two “ears” need the most work as they have to fit over the curves of the wheel arches, and tuck under the rear wing/deck overhangs. Each attach to two existing small L brackets; one at the top of the arch, and another under the outer edges of the rear deck. Also, the passenger side “ear” needs an extra bend to clear the wiring harness that passes through the top of rear wing.

Once I got the panels to fit, I removed them and added beads of 3M CP 25WB+ Fire Barrier intumescent sealant to seal all contact points. I then fitted the panels and pop riveted them into place. Then I added another coat of sealant to all the joints. I’ll let the sealant cure for 24 hours, then refit the interior.

All in all it was a fun project that took me about a week (off and on), and someone with even a rudimentary knowledge of metal working would do it in half the time it took me (halve that time again, if no interior is in place).

Cheers

Jim
