Alpha206
Hi, a newbie here - had my 72 PI about 3 months now - noticed today when some *%!$& cut me up that my horn has stopped working. Odd thing is that it works perfectly (and annoys all the neighbours) if the engine isn't running - something's obviously not connected up correctly but as electrics aren't my strong point (to say the least!) I haven't a clue where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Laurie
Hi Alpha and welcome The horn should be powered via purple wiring which is fed from the fuse box (2nd one up from bottom) and the feed to that ie on the other side should be a brown wire which supplies power via a relay from the alternator. Might I suggest that you check that the purple wire has not been connected to the bottom fuse as this is where power to instrumentation etc comes from. I am thinking perhaps that once the ignition is on, the power supply, if it is from the bottom fuse, would be inadequate to kick the horn off! A shot in the dark but I discovered recently that my overdrive didn't work as some *&^% had wired the fuel pump into its circuit and the pump was taking all the amps. Corrected the source and bingo. Good luck Laurie
Alpha206
Cheers Laurie, Purple wire appears correctly connected, but have just spotted a short length of purple wire on what looks like the horn relay (you can tell I'm really new to this, can't you! ) that has come adrift (which may explain the weak warbling from the horn before it ceased altogether). Think I've got my weekend project now...
Alpha206
I think I'm getting somewhere...worked out that the overdrive wires are running through the horn relay and vice versa (which according to my trusty Moss catalogue is the same part number as for the overdrive relay so shouldn't really matter..?). However, the upper relay is missing one of the terminals (W2) so looks like I need to replace that relay - I attempted to connect them correctly & found an overdrive wire left over! So next step is to replace the relay...anyone have any other ideas? Will also attempt to check fuel pump power source...
Alpha206
Finally I've found a day cool enough to sit & fault-find. Relays OK, fuel pump not a factor. What I have discovered is that the engine doesn't need to be running (contrary to my original post) for this fault to manifest itself - with no key in the ignition, or with the key merely inserted (position 0), the horn works perfectly. Turn it to position I or II and...silence. Turn it back to 0 and still no sound. Remove key...horn works. I'm coming to the conclusion a wire is adrift somewhere (particularly as a few weeks ago the horn would work whilst driving, albeit a weak "burble") in the area of the ignition barrel. Before I start dismantling things, anyone got any other ideas/advice?
Alpha206
Problem solved...although it was down to my local Triumph specialist in the end. Ah well, it's only money Turns out the wiring from the column switches was crushed between the column clamp and the column itself. Annoyingly I noticed the wires in this state when taking bits apart and though it odd but in my frustration (by this point) assumed it was one of those many quirks of British manufacture (I normally drive Swedish!). Anyway, wires replaced & re-routed and as a bonus my hazard flashers (modification) are now working! Edited August 16, 2006 by Alpha206
