GSKTR4
Just in case anyone missed the news, the MSA have finally published details of the changes to the "Blue Book" for January 2006. In a nutshell, the Historic Road Rally age group is being extended to include cars manufactured up to and including 31st Dec 1981, but this is subject to some important restrictions: no more than 4 cylinders no more than one cam per bank of cylinders no more than 2 carburettor chokes no forced induction only Group 1 or Group 3 modifications cars must have a Historic Vehicle Identity Form, to which must be attached the relevant homolgation papers Cat 3 cars can't be included in main results or win a rally overall (i.e. only compete with other Cat 3 cars) This would make a TR7, particularly one with a Sprint engine fitted, a very good choice ... and there's no restriction on using the Sprint engine in a non Sprint vehicle as there was a production version which was rallied within period, presumably to Group 1 standard (like group N production class), so all homologation papers should be readily available - can anyone help with this? Unfortunately TR8s (and Stags) would be excluded but a waiver may be applied for on daytime historic events on an event by event basis. No waivers are now being granted for night events. lesmcguffog
to be boring Details of homologated cars and homologation papers are available on the FIA site the link is - http://www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/histrally.html TR7 homologation number is 3071, this I understand is for the sprint engined car. The car was homolgated as in Group 3 Don't get too excited about class 3, as I understand there are already historic events which will not allow class 3 enterants - for example the Tour of Cheshire some historic organisors are concerned about the PR problems of having MK11 escorts etc rushing aroung country lanes in daylight hours and causing the death of daylight events. I understand that this is causing Andy Gibson of the HRCR some problems for next year as events they wanted in the daylight championship originally would only be accepted if they would accept entries from all 3 historic classes. Have you ever driven a TR7 quickly on a night or day event - if so you will realise why the cars rallied in the 70's and 80s always had their headlights up - the only way you could judge where the front corners were. Good fun going over blind brows!! Les
david ferry
Possibly being a little thick but there is a new section, K 22.5.7 which states 'Brakes are free but must comply with Construction and Use Regulations' Does this mean that you can use cross drilled brake discs, with standard calipers, on a TR4a? Also, K 22.21.6 has been amended in respect of modification of suspension to allow telescopic shock absorbers where previously lever arms were fitted. It does also state that the suspension type and mountings shall remain as that fitted by the manufacturer. In light of this, would a rear telescopic conversion, using new brackets welded to the chassis be allowed? Regards David Regards David
GSKTR4
Hi David, you need to read the new regs in conjunction with the Blue Book - the only modifications that can be done to historic cars have to have been available "within period" - so pre'68 mods for a TR4a. Most of the changes you have referred to apply to the "moderns" - if you want to run with and be classified as a "modern" (like Terry Pickering in his 1958 TR3 which is now a "modern" because it has TR4 rack and pinion steering!) then you can virtually do as you please
