TR7V8 homologation extensions missing

Recommended Posts

Hi Triumph fans

I have a TR7V8 for historic rally. My homologation papers 654 is missing extension 06.

I have extension 01..05 and 07..14.

What does the missing extension 06 contain ?

Was the TR7V8 using 21.4mm vented rear brakes as the Ford Escort did in 1980 ?

Was the TR7V8 using adjustable TCA arms as the Ford Escort did in 1980 ?

Also in homologation extension 09/08v, 1 avr.1980, there is a mysterious gearbox.

Text says:Alternative supplier, gearbox case.

What is that ??

I have bought Graham Robson's The works Triumphs and Bill Price's The BMC comp. department, but cannot find any data about the above.

Anyway the above books is great reading for motorsports peole.

Is there any TR7V8 rally spec. papers drawn by Bill Price or others when preparing the rally cars for any event, such as Manx, RAC etc..

I hope there are some guys out there that can clarify the above for me, or help me with some papers etc..

By the way I also have a Triumph Stag. (wonderfull road car)

Best regards

I have two copies of the TR8 Homologation form (just scans not originals), neither of mine contain Amendment Number 6. I have Amendment 05/04V which shows the Oil Cooler & Reinforced Suspension Parts, then 07/06V which shows the Roof Mounted Air Deflector part number STR379. No amendment page beginning 06.

Mine also has the page with reference to the Alternative Gearbox but I have never been able to find anyone who could tell me what that refers to - I thought all the TR7V8 gearboxes were LT77. However in another part of the TR8 Homologation papers there is a reference to the 4 speed gearbox and also Laycock overdrive so perhaps the picture shows this, even if it was never actually used with the Rover V8 engine?

The TR7 Homologation Form shows a Gearbox Part Number 520544 which appears to be a 4 speed box with Laycock overdrive, I believe this was used on the early 2 litre rally cars, as well as the LT77 5 speed box part number RKC0437. Maybe the gearbox details on the TR7V8 Homolgation were derived from the earlier TR7 papers?

I suspect that 06 was submitted and then withdrawn before it was processed - I can't recall having seen it, but withdrawal after formal submission might explain why 05 was followed by 07.

Tony, if you remind me next time we meet up, I'll explain about the alternative gearbox - or at least, what I know about it. Remind me about the alternative axle too.

Cheers

Alec

Regarding the mysterious 'alternative gearbox' .... if you look at page 220 of THE WORKS TRIUMPHS IN DETAIL (some stocks still available, but selling fast ..), you will find this comment :

'The choice of transmissions, too, was a masterpiece .... There were two sets of Rover-Triumph SD1-type five-speed ratios ....and another four-speed close ratio gearbox that has now been identified as that of the MGB GT V8, although no surviving member of the team recalls that it was ever used in a works car ....'

As I recall, a great deal of Q-and-A was generated among team personnel and myself when the book was being written, especially as the picture of the gearbox in the homologation papers is best described as 'indistinct' (which is exactly what most homologation-paper-writing experts always try to achieve !).

I can also confirm that I never saw a 'works' TR7 V8 running with anything other than the SD1-based gearbox.

Alec - thanks, will do that. And Graham thanks to you too for shedding some light on the gearbox issue - always good to hear from those who have first hand knowledge! The picture is indeed indistinct, I just thought my copy was a bad scan!

Per - hopefully this answers some questions for you.

Thanks everyone....

AnthonyF:
What year is your homologation papers accuired ?

If you get the homologation list from FIA you will see on page 7 that the TR8 is now missing ext.06

www.fia.com/file/2143/download?token=rEuyOfLN

I have homologation papers for SD1 Vitesse + Escort RS1600 + Escort RS1800 + Chevette 2300HS+ Sunbeam Lotus and all of these has continuous extension numbers. None is missing.

I think that the TR7 homologation parts was transferred to the TR8. That could maybe explain the 4 speed gearbox (alternate supplier)

Both the TR7 and TR8 has 14 extension pages according to FIA

3 weeks ago I ordered homologation papers for the TR7 (3071), but they have not arrived yet.

best regards to all of you
