DaveN
Hi folks I removed the upper steering column to replace the bushes, however long story I ended up in hospital.... unrelated!! When I got round to the reinstallation I have this piece found lying in the footwell. It is steel, painted, it is not a bearing surface, no wear marks etc. it is less than 0.1 in thick. Question is.......any ideas where it comes from? I can't even find it in the MM or the Moss IPC. Must add the car is a 74 CR series with the steering lock. foster461
Dave, that C shaped piece goes on the steering column between the steering lock and the rear clamp (the clamshell clamp with the shear bolts up by the dashboard). I have no idea what it does. I have one on my 74.5 TR6 and have never figured out what it is for. Stan
Brian Wiggins
Hi Dave! Had the same query a year ago myself! It's a spacer that mysteriously is not shown in the parts book. It's position is however shown in a side elevation view of the assembled column in the Triumph Workshop manual. Regards Brian
DaveN
Thanks gents! Got home from work this evening and whipped the column out again so I could slide it back on. I can see its purpose now it's a spacer between the aft clamp (the saddle clamp on the forward side of the dash) and the steering lock assy. Looks like it butts up against the anti torque strap. I shall sling it all back together tomorrow evening! Thanks again Dave
PaulAA
Dave At least you didn't find what I found under the collar, when the column came out last week: Fortunately, a bit of deft work with aluminium circular section by my man resulted in this:
foster461
Your man does very nice work Paul. That tube was very thin and fragile even when new and cant be easy to repair. Stan
PaulAA
Thanks, Stan. Nice touch that he sends me a cellphone picture of the column resting on a Porsche Museum wrapping, casually used as an oil soak...
