Which coil?

Recommended Posts

Hello Simon. I spent a while looking at this when I fitted the electronic ignition to my V8 DHC.  The standard TR7 loom has a resistive wire.  12 volts goes to the coil when starting, but only 6v when running.  The Rover SD1 resistor is a flat metal block in the engine bay doing the same job.

Your V8 will either:

1) Have no SD1 resistor and TR7 resisitive wire bypassed/removed - you need a 12v coil

2) Either the SD1 resistor is installed OR the resistive wire is still in use - you need a 6v coil

3) Both resistors are in place! - you need to remove at least one from the circuit

You can (obviously) use a voltage meter to check what is happening to your coil when starting and running.

Malcolm.
