Is this a Water Pump failing ?

Recommended Posts

Hi TR experts !

Checking the TR6 over this afternoon after a couple of weeks, and i see a stain on the engine block below the water pump, or the metal pipe from the heater.

The stain gets a drip of water on it when the engine runs, so its a leak !

My question is :

Is this a water pump / bearing leak or perhaps a leak from the steel heater pipe which is in the same area?

If it is the water pump then obviously i need a new one, in which case I think i recall that some are of dubious quality ? , where should i buy from ??

If its not the pump any suggestions welcome !

thanks in advance.

Steve

Have you considered the gasket the one between the head and pump housing.

Try re sealing the tube adaptor into the pump housing.

There is a core plug in the block just behind the pump housing I think.

Hmmm, thanks for the suggestions.

Might dismantle, clean and reassemble with new gaskets.

  • 2 weeks later...

Made it home early from sailing today, so off with the water pump for examination!

There is a trail of brown stain, same as in the pic above, from the water pump bearing hole.

So convinced the problem is the pump I replaced it, along with a new 82c thermostat and fan belt.

Car runs a little warmer now, just below half way rather than just over a quarter.

Temp nice and steady even after a good thrash and with a bit of traffic, and no leak !

Just need to drain and replace antifreeze next weekend and all should be good again.

A genuinely easy job :-)
