tr6tuga
Hi fellow Tr In the process of putting things together um my 1971 PI, a strange issue ! Hot starting the Tr, the starter strugles, voltage droops, almost can't crank the engine. After cooling, it starts at firts contact! Battery is ok ! Is this a sign of the original starter is in need.....
Austin Branson
Hi, there, back in the 70's I had a 7 1/2 litre Oldsmobile that behaved like that - as did a lot of American cars that I knew of (I lived in Canada at the time). I never did fully understand, but it was a very high compression engine (11.5 : 1), and I always thought the battery might be a bit small. I think you need to talk to a qualified Auto-Electrician. If your starter motor is drawing too much, that might mean a poor earth, and that might be a good point to start with. These are old cars, the main battery cables may have corrosion internally, and that would be a relatively cheap thing to replace as the second point. Check the Amp/Hour rating of your battery - is it the correct size? I guess it could well be the starter motor, but that is an expensive item, and should be fairly well down the list. Good luck, and let us know how you get on. Austin
Steve Knight
Most likely the stater motor brushes. They just need replacing. Simples.
