Island guy
Broke down a couple of week's ago - no spark, so I suspected the coil. I have just replaced the standard coil with a Sports Coil and, bingo, it started instantly. However, the engine now races at 3000 rpm on tickover. I didn't touch the carbs, the throttle and choke adjustment scews on the linkages are grounded (so no sticking of the linkages) and, with the air cleaners off, I can see and feel that the pistons are fully down. Surely, replacing the coil with a 'sports' coil couldn't be responsible, could it? Any other theories not related to the coil? I am reluctant to start adjusting the jets unless I have a good idea about why it should suddenly be necessary. All advice will be gratefully received.
Ashley James
This has nothing to do with the jets, just the throttle butterflies, but if the tickover is backed right off, then you may have the engine over advanced, so re-do the timing having first made sure the points are gapped correctly. Once you've done this, you can reset the tickover speed. Ash
Island guy
Many thanks Ash. This does make sense as the distributor was subjected to a fair bit of attention at the roadside.
