TR8 SPRINGS & SHOCKS ADVICE PLEASE

Not really such a thing as an 'ideal set up spring rate and shocks' for a V8 Grinnall . . . .

 

For one it depends to at least some degree on the rest of the car's specification.

 

For two it depends on just what you're looking to use the car for, and what your personal priorities are.

 

An appropriate set up for comfortable touring laden with holiday luggage is going to be quite different from a typical set up for regular sprinting or hillclimbing, for example. Even a set up for Sunday afternoon roaring round the lanes solo is possibly rather different to one for regular long trips with a passenger.

 

A few more clues would help !

It's just for touring, regular long trips with a passenger.

(oh, and a litle bit of roaring around of course!)

In that case, be wary of going too hard - it's all too easy to get carried away with Wedge suspension, and finish up with something that handles well on a billiard table smooth race circuit but is damned uncomfortable for long journeys.

 

Some of the springs on offer in recent years have been of poor calibre, and very short lived - V8 torque gives the rear springs in particular quite a hammering. Cheapo springs are best avoided !!

 

I'd suggest talking to Rick at S&S Preparations, he's a sound source of advice when it comes to road V8s, and Simon at TR Enterprises might also offer some helpful thoughts - they are both likely to be well informed as to the calibre of the various current offerings, and neither are given to undue b*llsh*t.

Hopefully the springs have improved from those of a decade ago then . . . . I went through two sets of Rimmers rears on KEH in less than 3000 miles, they just went soft. Skip fodder, albeit they were relatively cheap.

 

Agreed 200 ponies at the rear wheels is more than the average V8, but I wasn't impressed. The more costly replacements from S&S were a different story, they just worked. Still do.

Had the very short springs and spax adj struts on a V8 conversion for 10 years …was a good road sports compromise…stupidly went for full poly front end and new rubber turret tops etc - Completely ruined the ride/handling!!!  Now deciding which bits to take out to return it to usable - probably the stuff in the struts (torsion bars etc probably have less effect on the suspension travel /feel of the up and down motion? - which is currently about ZERO!   Any feedback from. Anyone who went in a similarly daft direction welcome pls!!
