Hi

has anybody had a better performance modern day core fitted to their standard TR4 radiator housing, i have been having slight overheating problems and wondered if anybody knows of anybody selling radiators with more cores, or is using tr4a rad which i believe has four cores instead of three.

advice very welcome

Yes,

I have fitted to mine 4 chrome tower radiators that were liberated from a new flat development.

They don't work, but they look pretty (like my wife).

Overheating problem sorted!

Fitting 5 row, 13 fin per inch custom cored radiator, we tried a 4 row 10 FPI unit at the weekend off my car, and all was good, so this beastie should make ice!

If anyone's interested, we can source for £150+vat, I guess the same unit will work on the 3's and 4a's, don't know about 5's (wish I did!)

Gentlemen, I think that if any of you are in the trade, and are suggesting a solution to readers by your business, I think it would be wise to clearly state that this is the case.

If you start a topic by offering a service or goods, then please ensure that this is only done in Buy/Sell/Trade.

Thanks!

i would like to take this oportunity to enlarge the debat about tr3/4 cooling.

I have recorded 3 way to improve:

-fitting a Kelowe fan.

-fitting a better radiator than original.

-fitting an oil cooler.

I have no running experience with tr's as I am just at the full restoration process state, but I am wondering which one is the best improvement about cooling .

So, if you have experience with any of those improvement, please give us an advice.

Thank you.

Just trying to help, as there has been an awfull lot of debate about cooling on this forum, you may note that I have also posted on buy/sell/trade. You may also notice that the price qouted is an awfull lot less than that being qouted for standard items by regular suppliers.

Essentially we have just worked through a common problem, and we are offering a solution to other "strugglers" like us.

I could always just post the phone number of the supplier, but why do a job twice?

Alec, your input was noted earlier.

All of the above are good improvements, not sure about the worth of an oil cooler for non competition use, but so long as it's not shielding airflow too heavily, it shouldn't do any harm.

The Kenlowe/Pacet conversion is a stunning performance addition, makes the car smoother, quieter and faster.

However you can sort out reasonably priced supply yourself.

Just to add to this I paid £150 for a recored rad for my rally TR4 from TR Enterprises and it works well. Looks like the price is about the same everywhere and this solution deals with the similar problem that I had.

Tony,

check the spec, we had to have this core specially manufactured, as it was not available "off the shelf", unless of course this is what they have done already?

Anyway-bottom line is, if it does the job, job done!

Hi Rob

I think thats what TREnterprises had done - i believe that mine was their first (as their carrier knackered my beautiful stanpart marked header tanked one - so they sorted me out quickly - nice chaps Steve and Simon!).

If your having them made new then I would think there is a good market as decent ones to recore are actually quite hard to get and really the only people that will end up doing it this way are those who want the stanpart pressings in the header tank - yawn ........ and they will search till the world ends .....

Regards

Tony

I had my TR4 radiator re-cored by J&J radiators in Coventry.  Cost was £85+ vat.  Much better than sending it off to one of the TR specialists who would only farm it out to do the job and then add their price margin on top!

Luckily I live in Coventry (about 7 miles out from Canley) so it was easy for me.  J&J did an excellent job, new core, turned it round in 48 hours for me, re-sprayed it and fitted the original "Cov Rad" badges back on it.

Excellent service and now I have a radiator through which I can run the garden hose at "full on" and what goes in at the top comes out of the bottom at the same rate.
