Bob Brennan
I've always used 20W non-detergent Castrol in the dashpots of both my LBC's, but recently I heard of folks running 75W gear oil in their SU's and improving performance. I checked the archives and the consensus seems to be either Pennrite or a 20/50. Have others any experience with heavier oil? Bob Brennan S. Freeport, ME

Thicker oil will give a richer mixture during acceleration, hence more power. Only during acceleration of course. In the SUs on my V8 I'm running a mix of 20/50 and EP90 gear oil. I use thinner oil in the winter. Ivor

Menno van Rij
Just simple 20W, or... compressor oil. Mind you, I think one hardly notices the difference between the various types of oil! The thing is, that the oil dampens the movement. Special dashpot oil is very expensive. I've looked it up: 6.75 euros for let's say 125 cc. That's about 53.00 euros p/litre! If you change to compressor oil, things look a lot better. Compressor oil is ISO rated. ISO 68 is the same as 20W and a lot cheaper! I've also found a solution for pouring the oil into the dashpot: my wife makes painting and she uses acrylic paint. The shop sells small plastic bottles, shaped like the specialised dashpot oil containers for 0.25 euros a piece! I poured some oil from the large oil container into this plastic bottle and the bottle is stowed next to the battery.
