I believe the original veneer was mahogany.

But Paul, the original timber soon faded to a daggy yellowish colour, when it could have been so much better.

 

Consider a veneer of Burr Walnut as I did with the 5, split in the middle and mirror image joined, and you'll think you're swanning around in a Bentley Azure.

I think maybe the yellowing was from the varnish finish - same thing on wooden sailboat spars in those days. If you use clear polyurethane, it will last much longer. But the choice of wood in entirely a matter of personal preference.
