HRCR Clubmans Series Events

Recommended Posts

Hi all

The HRCR programme for the Clubmans Series is as follows;

Newcomers Rally School, 30th January

With nearly 50 new competitors booked up for the HRCR training day in Cheshire, John Hunt has had to turn several away as there is not space for any more in the venue. This is most encouraging and hopefully will provide more competition this year in the Clubmans championship Newcomers class.

Round 1: Tour of Anglesey, 13-14 February

Last run in 2006, the Tour of Anglesey returns to a more common daytime Sunday event, although scrutineering and the first 2 Special Tests are on Saturday afternoon/evening at the Anglesey Showground, just as a taster for what follows the next day. There is no specific start time. Just turn up when you feel like it, and once through scrutineering and signing-on you can have a go at the Special Test which is repeated. Or, you could just hang around, watch a few others have a go, and then have a go yourself. Better watch out though, it gets dark early in February. Nice to see where you're going? Tests open 15:00 to 18:45, and then again from 22:30 to 23:30 for any late arrivals.

Sunday re-starts at the Anglesey Race Circuit for some more Special tests, followed by Regularity sections over some of the picturesque areas of the Isle of Anglesey. These are split by more Special tests at other venues, and two generous Rest Halts, half an hour at Foel Farm Park and Cafe on the shores of the Menai Strait, and an Hour at Pili Palas (Butterfly Palace) where crews should have time to check out the walk-through Butterfly haven and still have plenty of time to sample the Cafe. After another run through the Race Circuit Tests it's off to the Finish for hot meals at Trearddur Bay Hotel on Holy Island, near the port town of Holyhead, the gateway to Ireland.

Special Tests are now finalised, with the rally consisting of 14 Special Tests over five different Venues, linked by six Regularity Sections. And remember, crews are re-seeded for the Sunday based on the results of the two Tests at the Showground. Want to run 1st car? Better put your foot down on Saturday!

Anglesey is a low-lying island off the north wales coast, protected from the weather by the Snowdonia mountain range on the mainland side of the Menai Strait, thus rarely has snow like the rest of Britain. Anglesey is now completely clear of snow and ice.

Note the closing date for entries - 1st February. Regulations and entry forms can be found on the websites www.camconline.co.uk and www.welshmotorsport.org At the last look, the website reported 20 entries received.

Awesome event up against the moderns - BST82B wont be running as Ive just had a shoulder operation (unless the Kiff brothers crew her) and its one ill miss with some sadness. just look at the format and where the special tests are ....

Subsequent rounds;

Sat 6th March - Tour of Cheshire (Great single day event and the possibility of a Selectif at Swynnerton again !!!)

Sun 11th April - Ilkley Jubilee Historic Rally (Yorkshire at its best)

Sat 15th May - Leukaemia Historic Rally (Great Welsh single day road rally, with some 'regularities' in the forests and similar at Caerwent.

Sat 12th June - East Anglian Classic (Airfields and turkey farms in Norfolk, great fun in the rain)

Sun 1st Aug - North Yorkshire Classic (New one to me, so ill see you there for the first time)

Sun 29th Aug - Tour of Wessex (Sumilarly ..... but closer - note that the date on this one may come forward 3 weeks)

Sat 9th Oct - Regis Rally (Tests on the Goodwood Estate ......)

Sat 23rd Oct - Cloverleaf Historic Rally (Complicated and picky navigation, but improving fast Im told)

I hope to see lots of TR's out this year.

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony

Thank you for the HRCR list of events... I think our first will be the Ilkley rally this year but in the 2000 MK1 this time... she's been prepared for battle... look out Escorts!

Interestingly starting 6th June we're taking part once again in Conquest events 'french revolution rally'. Last year we were the only TR... this year we're one of five! A works TR4, our TR4, a TR4A, TR250 and a TR5. along with a brace of XKs, 2 bentley, big healeys, MGs, e types, porsches, Alfas, lancia etc... Looking forward to a competitive event.

Cheers

Darren

I've put an entry in for the Tour of Cheshire - it's our local event and a good opportunity to try the car out. Neither of us has ever done a regularity road rally before so it should be good for a laugh! But we'll give it a try.

The Ilkeley Jubilee too I think, probably just the Run but you never know, depends on what sort of a mess we make of the ToC navigation!

Still want a sumpguard for the TR, Darren? I'll let you know how the new design performs on the ToC. I took your advice on the tyres, Tony, six new 185/70 Dunlop SP82's now arrived from Paul Dyas. Do you reccommend standard pressures?

The first HRCR Challenge event for us is probably the Get It Sideways Stages near Cirencester on April 17th. Then the RDP Welsh Rally; Epynt on pacenotes, another first time for me, can't wait! Er - how are TR4 brakes for fading I wonder? Nah, I won't be going that fast.....

Hi Nigel

Thank you for remembering the sump guard... I'm currently preparing our DKW 3-6 and funds are a bit thin. It would be good to take a look at the sump guard at the Ilkley Jubilee as we will definitely want one in the future. We might be doing the run as well.

The TR4 cut into the guard did look cool.

Good look on the tour of Cheshire.

Speak soon,

All the best

Hi Darren

You're catching me up in collecting too many cars to work/spend on! Still, that's what makes life fun, but I just can't fathom why the wimmin' don't see it that way.........I've only got the four rally cars in my fleet at the moment.

The guard will be developed over the next few rallies so watch this space. The acid test will be if it gets ripped off on the first bend of the first forest stage, I suppose. Glad you like the logo, wait 'till you see the new seats.....

Quite likely to be doing the Ilkley so look forward to seeing you again then. I expect you to be entered in the 2000, though!

Hi Nigel

Seats...? Have you designed these as well. You'll be putting us to shame. I struggled with three different types of seat for the 2000 and ended up back with the originals! Never mind I can fit the other seats in the DKW which currently has the bench seat set up.

We did the Ilkley Jubilee "run" last year in the TR4 and really enjoyed it. We'll probably do the run again because I've de-bumpered the 2000 and current UK road rallies forbid this, but there's no way I'm going to put them back on when all the continental rallies have no problem whatsoever... full war paint and stickers... they absolutely encourage it, cant even have my black bonnet in the UK.

Good one to look at for next year is the costa brava classic... heavily subsidised... they transport your car from Goodwood, accomodation, food, choice of regularity, test etc. I think about £1400 per car, but can be cheaper for rare entries.

Moving house this year so missed out unfortunately.

What else have you got in your collection Nigel? Will your friend be at the Ilkley Jubilee with his tailfin Merc? Or is it now the mini cooper?

Cheers

I bought the seats from Motordrive, Darren, the new regs from this year say they have to be FIA approved with the stickers to prove it, which are only valid for 5 years. But just to be posey, I had them embroidered with the 'TR4' logo as well!

I know the MSA are trying to keep road rally cars looking as standard as possible, but it's a shame when there is such a lot of evidence for the rally-look Triumph 2000/2500's - like on the front cover of 'The Works Triumphs', for example. I was worried that the latest rules would force me to put bumpers back on the TR, but the MSA specifically allow 'sports cars' to leave them off, for some reason. Why should they be treated diffrently? Once my TR is stickered up for the HRCR Challenge it's going to be difficult for me to do UK road rallies with it too. After your experience on the French event last year it looks worth trying continental rallies, especially if they're much more relaxed regarding rules. Are you intending to use the DKW for rallies?

PS. Oh, yes, the rally cars! Currently I have the '63 TR4, a Freelander which was built to do a desert rally in Tunisia, an oldish Bowler Tomcat V8 ARC Comp Safari racer, and my ex-Dakar Bowler Wildcat 200, which I was using for hillrallies plus the MSA National Offroad Championship until I managed to roll it badly and it's still being rebuilt. It runs a chipped 3-litre straight-six BMW turbo-diesel engine putting out around 240 bhp and 400 ft.lbs. of torque. (Also a 4.5 tonne Iveco 4x4 truck camper which we have explored Europe and Africa with - see my reference to 'extreme motorhoming'!!!)

Rick laid the Merc up after the Yorks Revival with various problems and to concentrate on the Mini build, which is going well and they hope to have it out later this year.

Hi Nigel

Some powerful vehicles in your line up, must be really different jumping in the TR4 after a bowler wildcat!

I had envisaged using the DKW 3-6 for classic road rally in the UK, because it is absolutely stock and very unusual. I had to hunt high and low to find a good one, ended up in Frankfurt!

Been laid up since 1980. Its absolutely solid but has that patina and slightly moth eaten around the edges which I'm going to leave. I've managed to get hold of a spares car and a new fettled engine.

So lets see what putting the power down in a three cylinder two stroke with transverse leaf springs and drum brakes all round is like! DKW/auto union in this model won outright the acropolis rally 59, Safari rally 56 and 57 and came third overall in the 58 Monte Carlo, I'm hoping it rubs off on my road rally efforts.

Should be ready for the summer.

here's a link of one in action.

Hi Darren

Your DKW sounds like a nice project, I love to see something different, look forward to seeing it. I can remember DKW's and Auto Unions well, they were similar to the early 3-cyl 2-stroke SAABs and they did well in the day too. Especially in Erik 'on the roof' Carlsson's hands (please don't do that though)! Do they have a freewheel function like the SAAB?

I completely agree with your principle of not 'restoring' it, too. Leave it as it is and preserve it's originality!

From my experience with 850 Minis etc in my impoverished student days, the key will be to keep it revving on song and don't slow down for anything! Power to weight ratio is important; my Wildcat in full Dakar trim weighed getting on for 2 tonnes, so compared with the TR at half that weight the comparison between the two isn't so different. I'm trying to lighten it for British hillrallies but there's a limit - have you ever tried lifting a Land Rover axle??? The 340-litre fuel cell, three spare wheels, sand ladders, shovels and full desert survival gear (including tent, sleeping bags and 10 ltrs drinking water) have gone, though...

Regards

Nigel
