Starter motor failed, I think

Recommended Posts

Well, after ruminating about selling the 4A, the starter has promptly packed in, I think.

It has been getting slower for weeks, although it is usually fine once the engine has warmed up. Have cleaned all terminals, but the solenoid just clicks, and I am seeing 12 volts (well, 11.97) on my multimeter when I hook it to the positive terminal on the starter and either depress solenoid button or turn ignition key...so I think the circuit is ok? If I hold down the solenoid button none of the cables get warm.

Am going to try jump leads before I do anything else, just in case I've got battery issues. However, assuming I need to remove the starter, and assuming it needs more than a clean and some new brushes, how do I tell which ring gear I have on the flywheel? Should it be obvious through the starter aperture?

I did also notice that I have no charge going to the battery below about 1200 RPM. When the engine is idling at 800RPM the ammeter shows a discharge of 2 or 3 amps. I can't remember if it was always thus, I have tended to ignore it as I do a fair bit of distance driving and don't tend to have long periods of idling.

thanks

Yes, you'll be able to see and feel which way the chamfer.
