Stearing rack TR4

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As with most things on my car, the little jobs turn into big ones.... :( (I am getting used to this, as I spend most of my professional life working with British built aircraft of the 80's. Basicaly a TR with wings  )

Everywhere I look, I read that it will be a waste of time and money to rebuild a worn stearing rack, due to the quantity of easily available new racks. The double shipping costs associated with an exchange or re-condition are also disuasive, as I live on the continent.

I was therefore surprised to learn that Moss have no new racks (PN: 305648) and only re-condition customer units. TR bits have new stock but tell me that shipping will be expencive.

I am concidering re-conditioning my rack myself. Does anyone have experiance of this? My other option would be a modern "quick rack" or biting the bullet and getting the TR Bitz rack shipped to France.

What is the general recommendation from you guys?

Regards,

Richard.

Hi Richard,

Being in the middle(?) of my tr4 nut and bolt restauration, I too was debating as to what to do.

It is actually surprisingly easy to recondition it yourself!

If your unlucky the worst you'll need is a new or good 2 hand pinion, the other parts are mainly shims.

Give it a try.

Cheers, John

I don't know the full story on this, but there have been postings on the Forum about

new racks not having any provision for greasing.

This leads me to wonder - if Moss recondition yours, is the removal of this provision

part of the reconditioning?

If that's the case, maybe it's worth trying to recondition it yourself.

I was lucky - my original rack (with about 100,000 miles on it) was checked (by a TR

specialist) and didn't need anything doing to it (except degreasing and painting).

In contrast to Alan's experience, my rack, with perhaps 60,000 miles, most definitely did need replacement parts (the pinion, the ball joints at the end of the rack etc), but then it had been through rather a rough time in 1962/3 in the hands of the Works' rally drivers. As it is a primary safety item, I had it re-built professionally and was happy to pay for it.

Hi all,

Im just getting to the end of the rebuild of my rack for the TR4. Thanks John for the motivation ;) .

As anticipated a new pinion and 1 new ball link had to be fitted with the normal gaters, clips etc. However Im stuck for the shims to put under the grease nipple cap which sets the pre-load to 2lbs over 8inches.

These shims are listed in the Moss catalogue as item 91 on page 66. Neither Moss or TR bitz supply them. Does anyone have any? They are 24mm ID and 30mm OD and available in 3 thicknesses. I need 0.6mm in total. If I cant get any I will have to carefully grind the base of the cap to compensate, but fingers crossed.....

If anyone elce is undecided as to do the rebuild of their rack. Go for it, the job is interesting and quite easy. Moss stock all required bits (except shims <_< ).

Regards,

Richard.
