TR4a Stereo install

Recommended Posts

I would like to put a new stereo MP3 CD player in to my TR4a. I dont want to buy one only to find it wont fit. To avoid taking out the current stereo can anyone tell me of any compatibility issues relating to putting in a new stereo. Are they still the same size or do you need special brackets etc.

Thanks

Sous

Hi Sous

A modern stereo needs a Letterbox shaped slot IE full size of unit,

the original 4A slot was small oblong & 2 holes for volume/tuning

knobs unless its been altered, which most have.

I have a period radio in the original slot (unwired) & fitted

a modern stereo in the glove box which can't be seen

when the lid is shut. Make a hardboard cutout too fit in

glovebox & cover with vinyl then cut out slot for sterio

feed wires though hole cut in rear of glovebox, job done. ;)

The other thing to remember is that TR4's were positive earth - not sure when they changed from dynamo to alternator and hence +ve to -ve earth... Perhaps it was with the intoduction of the TR4A?

If you have +ve earth, it is relatively easy to change polarity and hence have the ease of fitting 'modern' extras as desired.

All radios/CD players are of course -ve earth with 'DIN' mountings....

Ian's right what he say's.

My 4A was +ve earth & i converted it to -ve earth, but

not all 4As where +ve earth there was a change over

point but it was not documented hence a lot of posts

discussing it.

Make sure you wire it correctly or your nice new stereo

will fry! :(

OK thanks very much guys. I will check in to +ve / -ve. The stereo in there is a tape player probably from 80's so Im guessing its already OK but will check.
