Setting up a TR6

Recommended Posts

If I were you I would take it to someone who knows how to set the engine up - ie London is not far and there are a couple of marque specialists up there . Unless you are very lucky a RR man will only know how to wire up a Subaru to a PC which is as much use to you as a chocolate teapot . He will maybe be able to set up your ignition but unless he is a TR expert he will probably **** up your metering unit if he touches it.

Think i have metering unit issues and am fed up of playing, just want it done.

Hi Fraggle,

Echoing Scotty, I would suggest a TR expert first and a rolling road second. Don't know about Brighton area but if you want to avoid London (and who doesn't these days) you have CTM about half way between Portsmouth and Southampton (about 2 miles from Jct 9 on M27). Although mainly known as a "chassis man" Colin does seem to know TRs from top to bottom. Give him a ring and see if he can help.

On a more flippant note you could try PM ing Stephen Cooper (see TR6 PI thread) to find out who set his car up. Apparently it has done 50k miles in 8 years, has never broken down and does 30mpg! :D

Hi Ragtag,

The 'flippant note' isn't altogether justified. Stephen is nobody's fool.

It's all too easy to overlook, these days, the way in which we ran these PI cars 30 or 40 years ago . . .

'Round the clock' mileages were not uncommon, and 250K was by no means unheard of. That's not opinion, that's fact, as in been there, done that etc etc.

Properly set-up and maintained, the good old Lucas PI system worked. And it worked bloody well.

End of discussion.

Cheers,

Alec

Just to echo Sandy’s sentiments regarding your issues; you need to be sure everything else is right & it is just tuning issues before shelling out for a session on a RR. The guy won’t be expecting to cure basic maintenance or adjustment problems & a session should is for those final tweaks on an engine already properly set up mechanically & running pretty well; no amount of time on a RR will cure problems with a poorly set up unit.
